It's not true that you have to damage the boss. As long as you take part you get a drop chance even if you don't damage the boss. I've had plenty of drops like this..
On topic.. I've had the fusion rifle drop once.. only ever class items and armour otherwise..

I think this is correct too, I'm sure I've had drops when I have not damaged the boss. I think it is the taking part that counts.
