It's not what you think. All it does is slow down scope movement when hovering it over an enemy.
Don't believe me?
Play a game like Team Fortress 2 or some other game. It can be console, PC, doesn't matter. Notice that in some games it is a lot harder to snipe or to even hit any shots for that matter. Because of that many people will use a crazy low sensitivity so they can hit shots.
That doesn't necessarily mean they are bad at the game, it just that the truth is this: it is a lot harder to judge how much you should move an imaginary gun with your hands than it is with, say, holding a real gun.
There is really no need for an explanation of why that is. It just is. And if there is a reason it's not necessary to prove my point.
Hover over an enemy in destiny. Notice how you crosshairs move slower than when just hovering over air. That's aim assist.
It does not give free kills. All it does is affect how much slower the crosshairs move when hovering near an enemy.
Proof? Witnesses. I'm a good sniper. My friends are good snipers as well. I cannot tell the difference in ease of use between one sniper and the rest.
"Well that's because you only use high aim assist snipers and can't tell the difference."
Wrong. I rocked an Efriedeets spear back in year 1 (not final round, mind you). Check the facts. That has an aim assist of 10. Yep! 10! And I was good with it too. But I'm not here to talk about myself.
Now in year two I main the dreaded 1000-yard Stare. And that's not because some pleb told me I'll get free kills. Honestly, it's because I got it for free from that vanguard quest. Then I got a nasty roll on another one and havent put it down since. Then all of a sudden people were talking trash about my favorite gun. I still don't understand it.
What makes a gun easier or harder to use is the scope. I can wreck face with any sniper as long as it has the agile or tacsys scope. I'm absolute trash with all the others. I've tried every one and those are the two that fit for me.
Aim assist just makes guns feel more natural. It compensates for the awkwardness of moving a virtual gun with your hands. You still have to be good with the gun to get the kills.

Edited by DRod: 11/26/2015 4:45:12 PMWell AA is a little needed in this game due to the fact that all of the characters in the game move much faster than other shooters so there has to be some level of AA, but it does need a nerf as it stands right now even the casual players can easily snipe like they've been doing it forever.

1 ReplyAim assist has always bugged me in Destiny, if it is what I'm thinking it is. Whenever I have one enemy in my sights and another comes running past my crosshairs decide to try to snap to that person and I have to re-aim. If that's aim assist, then give me the option to turn it off because it does more bad than good.

Bullet magnetism is also a part of aim assist in destiny. A higher aim assist will increase bullet magnetism. Snipers have the same bullet magnetism regardless of what their aim assist stat is however.

8 RepliesYet another scrub who's never played a real shooter. Aim assist has no place in PvP. Not just on sniper rifles, but if only one gun platform in a game DOESN'T have AA it should be snipers.

Nothing more fun for me than a cross map sniper battle. My k/d is crap but I'm getting better.
-
3 RepliesHas a aim assist of 25

Bump! All those who say it needs a nerf are whiny crucibabies who just whine about everything they are killed by, with no valid reason.
-
Thank you. Nobody can get this through their heads. You can't just point a sniper in the general direction of a guy and expect to get a headshot. It definitely helps but it isn't as bad as people say.

1 ReplyI would love to see how people would re-act if Destiny took it out of the game for one week. People would loose their minds.

Bare in mind if you do have a problem with the aim assist there are ways for you to lower it/turn it off... For example your snipers scopes alter your aim assist, so if you don't like it change it ;) people choose to have it because people want it.

Aim assist isn't going away believe it or not. They're not going to take a weapon back to the drawing board and redesign the mechanics of an entire weapon class, all because a minority are a bit salty about being killed by a sniper. Find something more productive to complain about.

5 RepliesEdited by Gu4rdi4n Down: 11/24/2015 6:36:57 PMRemove aim assist and add sway on snipers.

7 RepliesEdited by Mr.Thrasher: 11/24/2015 5:20:14 PMIt helps you aim, it should go away. There shouldn't be any kind of slowing down. There should be, no drag when someone runs pass my screen.

36 RepliesI love reading sniper bullshit when trying to defend their cheese.

OP is 100% correct.

9 RepliesWhile I like your explanation and I agree 100% with you, you need to be aware that it feels like 90% of the people here are or behave like 12-year-old kids. You will never convince them that 1.) someone outplayed them 2.) they just walked in a stupid place and got domed 3.) the gun that killed them is not op (because they are the best and no one else has better aim!) Still beautifully explained! Have a nice day and do not let the flaming kiddos upset you too much :)

2 RepliesPersonally I think that it's a mechanic that shouldn't be in games.

1 ReplyThis is the best !

1 ReplyI agree with you 100% but there is one thing I'd like to add, the aim assist does drag your scope towards people !

6 RepliesI can tell the aim assist is there when I'm sniping a enemy then his buddy passes by yanking my aim towards him missing my shot.
