EDIT: Still people responding even though this post has been dead for awhile... I guess people really want their voices heard bungie!
EDIT: Can we get this highest rated so all the devs can see?
EDIT: Bungie!!! Please read this and the replies! Remember. This is what the players want.
EDIT: This is now a petition to let us upgrade old gear! "Sign" below. But please read and discuss as well!
So... Many are speculating about what the deal is when it comes to ascending old weapons and gear to higher levels when The Taken King arrives. Many people say that they should be able to ascend their old gear to these newer levels, while others think it would be better just to move on to new gear. DeeJ puts it like this: "A ten year relationship with the same weapon seems boring in our opinion." (Not his exact words).
This indicates that Bungie is very well considering making our old weapons obsolete compared to TTK weapons/gear. I understand were DeeJ is coming from. I really do. But I have to disagree.
We all know that the weapons and gear from the new expansions adds something new and cool to the table. This is why Guardians swap out one of their old weapons for something else (Because using the same stuff over and over gets boring, like DeeJ said). But there is always something that you really enjoy using, and keeping by your side. Of course, you'll swap it out for something else depending on what the situation demands, but otherwise it is your favorite. Making those old favorite weapons obsolete... Just kind of sucks.
When TTK comes out, all the gear and weapons from previous expansions and vanilla destiny will completely die out.
Alright, now I'm getting into a touchy subject... "Day 1 Players". I believe that no matter when you buy the game, you should always be able to experience the game equally. But... I also think that day one players should be able to keep their old items. It just seems mean to take all those weapons viability away. I want newer players to look at a veterans old vanilla or TDB gear and say "Woah! What's that cool gear?" Their should always be a variety of gear and weapons for players to choose from. DeeJ is worried people won't continue to play Destiny if they only use the same weapons over and over... Listen up DeeJ. You won't have to worry about that if you guys add new and exciting options for players to choose from. The players will use the new stuff... But they also want to be able to show off their old stuff, and say " Yeah, this is what our gear was like before all the different expansions.
IN CONCLUSION:
-I believe you should be able to ascend year 1 items to keep up with year 2 items
-I believe as long as their is a wide variety of gear and weapons to choose from, and new challenges in missions and raids, people will continue to play destiny for a long time even if players keep some of their really old stuff (If our old stuff was "boring" we would dismantle it)
-And please, for the love of God, let my Venation III still be viable in TTK. It is so sick...
EDIT: Thanks for all the replies! We are trending!
Taking HoW as the example, we got lots of new weapons via trials, poe, queen etc, now some of them I have loved and they have become my new go to's whilst some ive disliked and stick to my old favs like supremacy. Now deej can call it boring keeping the same weapons but on the flipside how cool is it in say destiny 3 where someone sees you with the supremacy, a gun you have carried through everything since week 2. ttk looks to destroy our "legend" and take us to vanilla 2.0, they shouldnt introduce a system allowing us to use whatever the hell we like to then bottleneck us back into such a tiny selection. Thats one massive step backwards!
sure mmos reset but they bring with them a freaking ton of content, ttk would need to replace vanilla + 2 dlcs to warrant that idea. Thats doubtfully not going to happen so destiny should stick with what its set out. Let us carve out story with the gear and weapons we use, the new stuff will be adopted, some of the old will filter out but one things for sure it makes eveything alot more interesting.
if they want to end the reign of some weapons maybe introduce an ascension material that is limited in number say 2 per char and thats it, no more ever or until year 3. for example (normal/hard raid) that way you are extremely picky about what you take with you and what you leave behind.
tl:dr: if ttk is vanilla 2.0 then bungie took a huge stepbackwards. Let us carry on carving out own story with our choice of weapons and gear, new stuff will be adopted, some old stuff eventually wiped out but dont bottleneck us back into such a tiny selection like the base game had where we all used and looked the same.
EDIT: Another awesome comment! First part is HILARIOUS! It has some good points. This was made by Cloney:

"Hey you grinded out VoG to get all that Armour and all those Weapons in the beginning? You're attached to them and love them?"
"Yeah I do"
"Well that is boring as shit, so you can't use that shit anymore"
I honestly do not understand Bungie's philosophy when it comes to gear....especially when the new gear they release is getting consistently more boring than the gear from the Vanilla game.
Im going through VoG still trying to get the Armour (because I came late to the Raiding Party) because I love that shit over the PoE stuff, over the Crota stuff and all the other Endgame stuff that is out there.
They seem to have this philosophy of forcing players into a smaller and smaller selection of gear they higher level they are....its utterly ridiculous, I mean some of the Exotics are Exotic because they have a long history with Previous Owners who used them for a long time...
Thorn, The Last Word, Bad Juju....all used by people within the Destiny lore and became famous sort after guns, isn't the entire point of Destiny forging your own legend?
What if my Guardian wants to be known as the badass Titan who took down Crota, Atheon and all the other bosses in between in her Kabr Armour, wielding the Word of Crota, Black Hammer and Gjallarhon?
It just boggles the mind that they ask us to play through all this content so much, being bitchslapped by the RNGesus at every step, and when we finally get what we want....
....they tell us "Sorry, using that is boring, use this crappy new gun instead because it will do more damage."
What about hawkmoon on xbox?

The first weapons released were too op. It was hard to add anything else that was better or equal. That is why people hate all the new weapons. The old weapons just have to die for this game to progress. If they had a transmog system you could keep the look, but please stop trying to keep this game from evolving.

#feedback so devs are more than likely to see it.
-
I'm guessing all legendary items will be left behind. Make way for new stuff.
-
1 ReplyEdited by ImNotCreative: 6/22/2015 2:25:10 PMI hope they leave all the previous weapons in the dust so we can start fresh with new weapons instead of previous op ones such as f lie etc.

Tl;dr

I think with every one to three comet expansions should come withe the ability to ascend old legendaries. We would still immerse ourselves in the new gear but every once in a while we would pick up our old favorites once again.
-
I doubt we will be able to carry weapons over. It doesn't matter at this point. I'm disappointed at how sparse Etheric light is. One Of the big things with how is " you can upgrade all your old gear!" I do nightfall and Poe every week. I played iron banner to lvl 3 for the light. I have only been able to ascend a few weapons and armor pieces thus far. I know its kind of early in the dlc, but at this point, it will be September before I get everything ascended anyway. So, scrap the old weapons for new ones, it doesn't matter so much. I will miss the Fatebringer though
-
Because leveling up a new gun to do the same thing your previous gun did is stupid. I've been using Gheleon's Demise since it dropped and all I've been doing is getting a new one. Now with HoW they took a step in the right direction. I hope they keep it that way. Lord knows I'm fiending for motes.

I just recently started getting most of the gear from VoG due to being late to the raiding party. I have been playing since October but never could find a good consistant raid group until a few months ago. Intially we focused on Crota to get to the current level cap at the time. Now we are going back and doing vault to ascend that old gear because its some of the best in the game. I now have a huge love for fatebringer and want to continue using it. If bungie doesnt allow us to use the gear we want whether it be vanilla or year 3 or 5 or whatever, then it will be the saddest day in destiny history. I reached 34 on 3 characters relatively quickly after HoW came out and now Im trying to get all my favorite gear ascended which apparently is the new grind. I would hate to put in all this work to get my best stuff to the new max then have TTK come out and all that work be for naught becuase those weapons and armor are "boring and obsolete".
-
1 ReplyI disagree. Why are so many people harping on about wanting new things, unique experiences, more varied content etc, but still want to use Gjallarhorn and Ice Breaker for the next 10 years? It's time to move on.
-
I would prefer the taking out of legendary weapon ascension, people will use what they like best, sure maybe we could a send armor, but to weapons no...
-
1 ReplyThe people have already spoken, we want to keep our favorite weapons and we want them to maintain relevancy throughout the years.

Edited by FateTDF: 6/22/2015 12:14:00 PMI do not think Bungie will stop you from ascending your old gear. Lets say you are not a day one player and buy the collectors pack in September. You and your "New" friends are having fun leveling and doing the VOG and Crota raids getting cool Weapons and gear. Fast forward 1 week later you are now Light level 40 and your VOG and Crota gear is now obsolete???? I do not think Bungie will allow that. It would turn away players. Bungie has repeatedly stated they want us to become our own Legend. So it should be up to the player what guns and gear they want to use over the next ten years. Will you use your year one weapons?? Year 4 weapons??? Or a mix of all??? The choice should be ours!!!!! I personally am using a mix, and I love the fact that I have variety. I was pissed when TDB came out and my VOG gear became obsolete after finally getting the last piece I need the week before. I just got the Vex mythoclast, and Henzen Vengenance last week and would have been really pissed if it was stuck at level 300. So thank you Bungie for letting me ascend my gear, giving me choices.

1 ReplyI have a fusion rifle, a Final Rest II from the old days of Destiny. It was my go to secondary, saved me in so my close situations and was always trust worthy. I never used it much after TDB dropped and I got Plug One, or even during the Hand Cannon/Shotgun era we are in now. I havent used that gun in months, yet I cant bring myself to dismantle it. There is some kind of connection I have with that dusty old thing, something about the legend this fusion rifle has left behind.
-
2 RepliesWell, one of the devs said that the reason some poe weapons have shank burn is because of new shank type enemy in TTK, so who knows
-
5 RepliesBungie just doesn't want people to only use VoC/FB
-
I don't mind letting go of gear as much as I do weapons, I actually am liking the gear I have seen and I hope the raid gear looks nice as well. As for weapons I am iffy about legendaries such as found verdict and fatebringer being obsolete but exotics NEED upgrades, I do not want to replace my well earned items. But back to legendaries, I would stop using old weapons only if we have feasible replacements. And by the looks of it I am liking the new weapons also.

Bump x 500

1 ReplyI'd argue since the introduction of etheric light it should continue to maintain your gear into the new levels...maybe cost more than one.

Edited by WormChi: 6/22/2015 8:43:00 AMI agree we should have the choice to create our own own inventory how we see fit. I have load outs in each character for both pve and pvp and never swap weapons. This is a mix of vanilla, TDB, and HoW. I would like to continue crafting my armory in this fashion. It's up to Bungie to create new weapons that rival the originals and become suitable replacements. The reason this whole discussion is happening is because 90% of HoW weapons suck. Most goods ones are from ToO which much of the player base will never obtain. So give us more choices and make the new weapons equal to their old counter parts. Don't take more choices away. In Magic: the Gathering many Alpha and Beta cards were overpowered and outclassed newer cards. The way WotC combatted this was by changing the power curve. IE combat became more important than spells and many new creatures then outclassed the older ones balancing the meta. Bungie just needs to create armor specific for certain content that will take away from some weapons but still leave them relevant for most content. They can also create content that only always year two weapons much like a Nightfall modifier for certain crucible games ( or even no exotics). ToO and Iron Banner should always allow everything while maybe the weekly playlist is just modern weapons.

I feel they will use the etheric light system bht under a different name to stop people using their stacked ethirkc light (eg, ethnic light) like they did wkth ascendant and radiant matirials
