I’m curious, cause I not once that a LOT of people will literally talk about this game like it’s the worst game ever, yet still play consistently. Has the gameplay method of grinding and loot boxes and RNG fueled a gambling like addiction, so much so that it’s difficult to play anything else? I have trouble getting into any new games these days. I always end up right back with Destiny and Fortnite.
I think these types of games use gambling methods to keep you hooked and addicted so you don’t leave. And that’s a problem.
What are your thoughts?

3 RisposteI would say Destiny 2 more than Fortnite. More things to case and grind for. Weapons and Armor that both have perks and stars. These perks and stats go directly into build-crafting and play style. Build-crafting has always been one of the main features within Destiny 2. How many times have weapon, armor or base abilities, been buffed, nerfed, updated or changed? It’s all to have the meta change and keep the players grinding for the newest option. If someone has an addictive personality, the game will probably get to them. Fortnite isn’t IMO, (at least in the battle royal side of the game), really built that way. Sure you can use real life money to buy skins and other things in the game. However, you also have in game currency to do the same thing. The skins and cosmetics don’t make you play better or give you an advantage. You are also not making a full character with special powers around what you are buying in the shop.

All these types of games fuel an addiction and they even use addictive strategies to bring players back. FOMO, grinding, resource caps, resetting progress, limited time events, limited time content etc - it’s all to drive population numbers and loyalty. Whether a person becomes addicted is a personal thing.

34 RisposteDestiny doesn't. I don't play Fortnite. EA uses neuroscience and neuroscientists to help designs systems in the same way gambling manufacturers do with things like slot machines. Bungie never has.

3 RisposteIs there anything funnier than jhermannITJ (the guy who writes an essay in every comment about Destiny) desperately arguing that Destiny is not designed to be addictive? 😂
-
1 RispondiYeah, it’s designed to be addictive. The design ‘catches’ some personality types while others don’t really get affected at all. I used to be caught up in it but started to care less over time and don’t play much now. I play Genshin Impact and started TFD a couple months back. Between them, occasional Diablo IV (although I haven’t touched the new season) and various other games I don’t have much time for Destiny.

Modificato da JazzyPaladin477: 5/20/2025 12:44:05 PMYup. There was a guy made a post on here yesterday hating on the game for not being rewarding enough. He said he had put in 11000 hours since 2020. That is frightening. People are spending 50% of their waking hours grinding this game, for years on end. A lot of players “hate” this game but is has them by the short and curlies. There is passion then there is flat out addiction.

Bungie said the system is built on the mouse get a treat psychological mess. So yes , destiny is rooted on addiction. I'm addicted

Yes.. the FOMO business model is manipulative

Modificato da xbroggiex: 5/20/2025 1:54:08 AMI think a lot of it comes from passion about the game, I think most cases are just that. I don't believe most people are addicted to Destiny like a drug and complain 24/7 about it yet continue to play it, there probably is some people like that though. There is however the nature of the game its a live service constantly updated game so naturally most of what you'll get is complaints about things because the game can change. Unlike older games where it is what it is and you either make do or if possible modify the game to what you want. As for Destiny and Fortnite in particular the reason why people keep coming back to them is because of a solid gameplay loop ontop of quick hit action that people have gotten used to. I personally don't think its to do with gambling or RNG or w/e but moreso due to the quick hit content/action that people have gotten a bit too used to everything being instant gratification, fast paced or constantly challenging otherwise people lose interest because people are more conditioned to having instant hits of dopamine.

RNG loot is exactly like a slot machine. It's the individuals responsibility to acknowledge the issue starts with their choices. Do business practices use psychological methods to prey on the weak minded? Yes. Most business' do., not just game developer's. You say you have trouble getting into new games. You are acknowledging a problem within you. Keep searching inwards and you will find the solution suited for you. Sometimes we end up spending way too much time on things to entertain ourselves. Out unconscious mind could be trying to inform our conscious mind that a change is needed. It can very detrimental to ones health to sit in front of a screen too long. Especially older gamers where we unconsciously miss interacting in the real world but can't consciously make the connection that we need more fresh air and interactions with the physical world and less with the digital world. Modern technology expands too fast for human minds on a large scale to keep up with. As much as new innovations can benefit humanity it can and is seen to be detrimental.

Every game has fueled an addiction, even pong
I think these types of games use gambling methods to keep you hooked and addicted so you don’t leave.
You're thinking wrong. For starters, there's no gamble without a risk. Destiny is just as much of a gamble as a gumball machine. Second, they're designed to give you a reason to keep playing, & there's nothing wrong with that. The people that lose control of themselves & develop an addiction need to identify their issue & rectify it themselves. Blaming Destiny & Fortnite for gaming addicts would be like blaming Crayola for the people that are addicted to eating crayons.

Without a doubt. And I’ll add that I’ve played years on out of spite. No friends no problem, I’ll just LFG. Coulda stopped when I finished the trophy set, and I almost did but returned since Witch Queen. However LFG has since kinda dried up since mid Revenant, and the goalpost in general has moved higher up than I usually go. A slow process but motivation is fleeting. During some down times I’ve played Spider Man, Bloodborne and Recently Devil May Cry 5, each time a blast. RotN and Solstice to finish the saga. Only game I’ll see through is Dauntless in another week

Drops in D2 are literally 5 wheeled slot machines lol

I think what is “addictive” in video games in general, not to mean everyone playing is addicted, is the feeling of accomplishment they provide while objectively accomplishing nothing.

Their isn't a single thing in destiny or any type of game like that can fuel addiction for me and thats coming from someone with actual addiction issues, pretty sure it just depends on the person taste. As a side note I think people just can't admit that they like the game despite its flaws and bad times.
