UK Train Suicide

Okay so this is quite a split issue. Today at around 3:30pm somebody jumped in front of a train on the largest station in London. This lead to hundreds of thousands of people being delayed as many people take trains to commute to work. These delays went up to 3 hours for some. And as this is a Friday night, many people have plans. All services from central London down to the south coast of the UK were affected. Opinions on the event differ. Many people think what he did was selfish, due to the effects on the driver, witnesses and all the disruption it caused. Others think that people have wrong priorities on this and should be more upset by the death. I'm interested to know outside perspectives on this and if anyone else has had any similar events occur. Stay safe.

  • It’s two sided. On one side, it is unfortunate that someone decided to take their life, but on the other it’s a tad bit selfish to make life more difficult for all the rest of the people around.

How can I have a real opinion? I do not know the motivations of the person that committed suicide or why they chose that method. No matter what, I feel bad for everyone affected by it.

Edit: snipped some personal shit that I didn't want here. It's sad for everyone involved, including the person that died.

It's a tragedy for sure but (and may get some hate for this), honestly, I feel this is somewhat like a less extreme version of suicide shooters in the US. A watered down version of "better to die a monster than a nobody." Now, I didn't know the guy so it could be a case of opportunity and he just wasn't in the state of mind to consider how his actions would impact others (ie: not selfish per se). Even so, while maybe this wasn't planned, I still worry it may inspire others. It might be a cold way of looking at it on my part but I feel the "you need to rethink your priorities" argument may almost justify such actions in the minds of some, and that's a dangerous precedent.

Glad they died. Worthless sack of shit. You want to kill yourself? Fine. But why cause that many people problems and the poor train conducter, splattering him, he will have nightmares now.

That man is despicable. It’s one thing to commit suicide on your own terms, but now he left the world by possibly mentally scarring thousands of people and possibly giving the driver PTSD. What an asshat, I hope that he’s forgotten.

              • It’s hard to blame the suicidal man for obvious reasons I won’t deny the fact what he did caused problems for a lot of people and there were other ways of going about it But I think what we should be focused on is preventing this from happening again instead of blaming someone for something that no one can change now or by feeling sad because someone died in a tragic manner

              • To give my own personal opinion on this, I find it regretful what happened, but as someone who works in south London, a journey that usually takes me 20 minutes took me 2 and a half hours, so I understand the frustrations. It's also important to note that even 8 hours later, trains are still experiencing heavy delays.

              • This is a tough topic which I understand some people have difficulty with. I think it could also be interesting to get the opinions of people outside the UK.
