Right now Destiny 2 feels like all treadmill, no carrot.

I'm just speaking for myself, here. We're being asked to do harder and harder activities for what is mostly the same gear; Tier 2 and Tier 3 aren't very rewarding drops, and that's where most of us will be spending most of our time during the leveling process. We get "carrots" along the way that we know we'll just be deleting later, that's not rewarding. The treadmill is broken. Our goal is to hit 400/500 and that's when we can start collecting the good gear, we're on a treadmill for a hundred hours or more, and while we're on that treadmill we're getting tiny power bumps and mostly the same gear as we've already collected. Sure, 400 rewards a Tier 5 version of the gun, but that's only if you make it that far. If I had to phrase this diplomatically, I'd say that the treadmill gets stale in a hurry, it gets stale long before hitting 400/500, and this isn't a problem that can be solved by layering on more and more Modifiers. The Modifiers make the process harder, but not more fun, it doesn't make the gameplay more rewarding; if anything the Modifiers add tedium, they add slowness in a game about power fantasies. Right now Destiny 2 feels like all treadmill, no carrot: We level up so we can go on a harder treadmill so we can level up so we can go on a harder treadmill. (Not a faster treadmill, mind you, just a taller one, with a higher incline.) The goal isn't to get the godroll (you can't until Tier 4/5), or to save up enough currency for a purchase (there's nothing to buy), or to max out our vendor rank (there are no more vendors); the goal is to level up, reach 400/500, and THEN the rewards start flowing. Right now, for most of the leveling process, it's just not worth it. The distance to the carrot is too extreme, the carrots we get along the way are too infrequent and, frankly, kind of mediocre; Solstice was great because it gave us carrots, it gave players an incentive to play besides just leveling up, for a moment it felt like the time spent in the game was rewarding with not just high level loot, but GOOD high level loot, then Solstice went away and the player counts dropped. Bungie should take a cue from that. Right now, it feels like the point of the portal, the point of the leveling process, is to farm player engagement. Make the treadmill slow so people keep playing, increase the difficulty to slow them down even more, keep players pursuing those carrots for as long as possible; whether that was Bungie's goal is not for me to say, but it's how the game feels right now, and I'm burned out. Renegades needs good gear, and more than that, it needs good rewards. Don't cajole me to use new gear by giving it a slight damage boost, make the new gear better than what I have right now, make it more fun than what I'm using. The rewards need to be more frequent, and more rewarding, the speed to level up needs to be dramatically increased, and maybe a few more goals need to be implemented, like bringing back vendor ranks. Intermediary goals, things players can focus on besides just the level grind, could go a long way. I'm a casual player. I made it to LL360 and I'm burned out. Maybe the hardest of the hardcore can stick out the treadmill to the end, but I'm not them. Destiny 2 feels like work at the moment, we grind so we can grind, that's not rewarding; the rewards we get aren't rewarding. TL;DR: Destiny 2 needs (at least) more loot, more frequent loot, and better loot; we need something to keep us playing besides the ultimate and distant goal of LL500; we need Bungie to focus on player fun more than player engagement.

 • Tier 3 is fine as a baseline. They did not need to make 5 different Tiers of gear as everything below that number is deleted and useless when older gear is so much better. They were far too overzealous with this rework to the system, no need to bump stats to 200, no need to grind 450/550, no need to add horrible modifiers to all activities automatically.
