Hey there, unfortunately no, as you saw, accounts can no longer be unlinked.
Bungie will not forcibly unlink on their end either.

Not the answer I wanted but thank you so much for confirming. I think it’s stupid Bungie did this. Basically, I can only play my characters on the PS4, unless I get a new PS5 or is it associated with my Playstaytion Network account?

They belong to the PSN account and the characters will be playable on both PS4 and PS5 as long as you are using that account.
