Impressive technological feats in games/comsoles?

Good evening everybody, this is Aifos coming to you alive from- . . . ? Shibuya? Now what in the world am I doing here..? ???: “YOU! Form a pact with me! Now!” Eh.. What? ???: “Just say you accept!” I.. Accept..? !!!!!!! What in the world was that!? You know what? Whatever! I got a thread to run here! I don’t habe time for nifty lightshows! ???: “What!? But the Noi-“ *ahem* Video games are actually kind of amazing things if you think about it. Sure, they aren’t the most advanced pieces of tech in the world, but they aren’t exactly cheap throwaway items either. From both software, and hardware perspectives, there are some pretty crazy things these plastic boxes have done, huh? So that’s what we’re talking about! It can be some impressive graphics, some cool obscure controller feature, an interesting way a game has interacted with its run of the mill controller, some neat game mechanics, so on, so forth! [b][u]Tl;dr? Here’s my point![/u][/b] Bits of technology, be it software, hardware, or something inbetween you thought was neat? My answer: [spoiler]So, if you’ve played, or seen gameplay of The World Ends With You on Switch, you’d know it utilizes a small blue cursor for a good amount of actions. Like one you’d see on the Wii. This doesn’t seem like much, until you realize that the Switch doesn’t have a pointer. There’s nothing on the controller, or the console, to read what way you’re point the controller. [i]But[/i] the Switch [i]does[/i] have motion controls! It can tell what way you [i]move[/i] the controller. So, in order to get this remaster to work, Square—or whoever did the development—had to use the precise motion controls of the Joycon to emulate a pointer, not by what way you’re actually pointing, but by how the controller moves from its default position. This has its advantages, and disadvantages from a regular pointer set up, but it works well, and I honestly found it really cool![/spoiler] But that’s all for now, folks! Jambuhbye!

  • I remember when DOOM 3 was about to come out, the lighting effects and monster effects were amazing and bassically the future of gaming many of us thought (which were true). The saliva on the demons were out of this world then. It's interesting seeing how far this stuff has come in the past 20 years. Even in the past 5 it's crazy.

ECHO has a very intricate system that could be right up this thread's alley. ECHO is a stealth action game of involving you and a building that tries to mimic you. It creates echoes, that can copy your looks but on their own they can only walk and attack. Thing is, everything you do outside of walking and shoving is recorded. do enough of these alternate actions and the lights go out. When the lights come back on, the echoes gain the same type of actions you used before the lights went out. The system itself is pretty interesting but the affected NPCs are pretty darn clever too from what I've seen of them.

            • No Man's Sky While many say it's a bad game, I doubt there is anyone who wouldn't agree that the technology used to make it has a lot of potential. I really hope more games are made similar, but have more of an objective.

                  • In Halo CE there was a loading screen after every mission. In Halo 2 however, there was only 1 loading screen and that was when you selected a mission from the main menu. Each level progressed without loading like in CE and I always admired that.

                      • While outdated at this point in time, Halo combat evolved did achieve a milestone for console fps controls when it came out, a lot of games followed suit in that design.

                      • borderlands 2 guns, they have over 18 million combinations, my friend even modded the game on his ps3 and he made all sorts of wacky weapons and items with it, even being able to copy a weapons model with the purplish white glitch model ingame, it was quite shocking.

                        • For me its definately Gravity Rush I was blown away by the idea and gameplay. The world was the perfect fit for it too!

                          • The xenomorph’s unpredictable ai in Alien Isolation. Instead of relying on cheap scripted jumpscares, creative assembly made an ai that brought on levels of tension with its mere presence. It made the whole experience feel a lot more natural.

                          • While the system itself was meh. The Wii's motion controls we're pretty fun. I remember in a couple shooters you could pivot the gun from side to side. Then there was an offshoot Soul Calibur game.

                            • As I accidentally started mentioning in your other thread, my efforts to come up with an idea for your other thread has reminded me of Layers of Fear. Bloober Team really knows how to change a world while you’re not looking at it. A painting may change if you turn your head from it. A room may change if you close the door on it, or if you just spin around in it. A normal ceiling may just turn into this if you aren’t careful.

                                • Backwords compat on xbox. Though for me personally they're missing: - Dungeon Defenders 1 (2 doesn't exsist) - Enchanted Arms - Eternal Sonata - Resonance of Fate - Final Fantasy XIII I remember when before it wasn't a thing, people where saying how much of an impossibility it would be. It also allows you to connect and play with people on the 360 as well, witch is what really blew me away.

                                  • The most impressive technological feat of this generation has got to be the PSVR. The fact it's even comparable to high-end PCVR gaming yet does it all on a base model PS4 with PS3 hardware is just insane.

                                    Every aspect of Snake Eater. Compare the technical accomplishments of that game to any other on the PS2 and it would come out on top. Metal Gear Solid 1 also had an incredible amount of technical accomplishments for a PS1 game. But I think the main hitter here is Shenmue. It was simply the game nobody believed could ever be made. It is the grandaddy of 3D open world games and all the seemingly trivial things that appear in them. Shenmue was the proof of concept for games like Skyrim, GTA, The Witcher or Gravity Rush. It's a very important game in history.

                                              • I know everyone likes to bully Mass Effect Andromeda, but playing it on a pc set on the highest graphics level, stepping into that first vault is moment that I'll always remember. The team that designed the "worlds" did a great job on that game.
