Trump has historically held a moderate point of view (moderate for America is fairly right wing for much of the world) which is why this is fascinating. We see some parallels to hitler, who many think didn't actually believe in antisemitism, but rather used it as a tool. Trump is using extremism as a tool, not a core belief in my opinion. The economic policy that the republicans generally believe in (trump is no exception as far as this election goes) is that by cutting taxes on the rich they will turn around and create new jobs for American citizens. They also feel that if they cut welfare they will be able to cut taxes even more, thus creating more jobs for those no longer on welfare and therefore they won't need welfare anyway because they can get a job.
