"That said, like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor," he said.
Asked just how "off" the Kinect can be, Whitten answered totally off.
"You have the ability to completely turn the sensor off in your settings. When in this mode, the sensor is not collecting any information. Any functionality that relies on voice, video, gesture or more won’t work. We still support using it for IR blasting in this mode. You can turn the sensor back on at any time through settings, and if you enter into a required Kinect experience (like Kinect Sports Rivals for instance), you’ll get a message asking if you want to turn the sensor back on in order to continue."
Article updated with a couple of questions asked to MS:
Can games that use Kinect for supplemental features and commands still be played without Kinect, or will any game that uses Kinect at *all* need the Kinect plugged in?
If Kinect is only used to enable supplemental features in a particular title, then you will still be able to play that game if Kinect is unplugged. Games where Kinect is required – like “Kinect Sports Rivals,” for example – will of course need the sensor to be plugged in.
Does Microsoft still have no intentions of selling a Kinect-free bundle?
Though we’ve changed this requirement, Kinect is still an essential and integrated part of the Xbox One platform. By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for consumers. We also strongly believe that once you try the all-new Kinect and the game and entertainment experiences it enhances or enables, you won’t want to use your Xbox One without it.
We still believe in Kinect. We aren’t interested in splitting the development base. The more demos I’ve seen, the more I’ve used it – the more impressed I am. The team feels strongly about Kinect, and I hope we’re able to prove that when you use it.
We also have a ton of privacy settings to allow people to turn off the camera, or microphones, or put it in a state just for “Xbox On” and IR blasting – there will be a lot of user control for that.
The thing we all understood, and hence this change, is that there are some scenarios where people just may not be comfortable. We wanted people to be 100% comfortable, so we allow the sensor to be unplugged. And clearly the “it dropped” scenario is possible.
The most obvious thing is watching a DVD/BD, or streaming a movie, or HDMI pass-through, your experience isn’t impacted (except you miss voice and IR blasting)
There is no “gotcha”, but obviously, if there is a game that REQUIRES Kinect (like Rivals), or something where Kinect IS the experience (like Skype), those won’t work.
That said, for people who have privacy concerns there are user control settings, which we believe are great.

So this is the 4th 180 MS has done. It is officially the Xbox 720.
It is coming all according to plan.

11 commentairesThanks a lot whiners. Now the future of gaming has been ruined. Innovation will never happen now. First the DRM, now this. People just want to kill innovation and the future of gaming. Innovation and future. Future and innovation. All gone. Innovation. Future. Gone.

1 commentaireMicrosoft: "You can turn it off and unplug it. You probably won't need it unless you're playing a terrible motion sensor based game." Consumer: "So can you sell a cheaper Kinect free bundle? It doesn't seem essential to make the console $100 more expensive." Microsoft: "IT IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL!!!! YOU NEED TO BUY IT!!!"
-
good news to hear instead of me having to cover up the kinect I can now keep it in the box and never plug it in. Then again ... I'm not getting an xbox one anytime soon so whatever.
-
1 commentaireAn article is needed to inform people of the 'off' button? How -blam!-ing stupid are people these days?
-
If they do decide to sell it without the Kinect, I'll happily buy an Xbox One over a PS4. However, they aren't likely to do this until after they sucker people into getting it on release and since I'm itching to play BF4 asap, it's PS4 for me!
-
1 commentaireMicrosoft shitting themselves lol
-
well you asked they deliver
-
Haha the 720, they've lived up to their name
-
1 commentaireYes! They finally used their brains! Can you believe this?
-
So this is the 4th 180 MS has done. It is officially the Xbox 720.
You son of a- !
-
Yeah, still not paying $500 for a console.
-
2 commentairesCan I pay Microsoft to not ship a Kinect in my Xbox One package?
-
2 commentairesI bet that there'll be a Kinect-less version too, bringing the price down to $400. Then there would be a very good competition between ps4 and xbone.
-
1 commentaireGood decision on their part. There's no way to convince people that Kinect is so essential that it has to be connected all the time. Mainly because it isn't. You gotta wonder what they were thinking when they came up with some of this stuff. While this isn't as obviously offensive as a 24-hour check-in, it's still something that never should've made it all the way to the final product.

Modifié par Enlightened One : 8/13/2013 2:06:48 AMNever mind.. Good news for Xbox One
-
2 commentairesWhat did I say long ago when the damage control from Microsoft began? What did I say? "Kinect is getting the boot." And what's happening? No longer required to function. 2014 will see a Kinectless bundle.
-
1 commentaireI can't believe people actually have a problem with this. It really blows my -blam!-ing mind to no end.
-
10 commentairesSo basically the fans bitch, moan, and complain, and the optimists will NEVER get to see the true potential of the Kinect. Good job.
-
I watched the unboxing and I had no idea how huge the kinect was! I hope that means its a lot better.
-
1 commentaireHow is that new? Everyone knows you could unplug it and or turn it off.
-
6 commentairesCan I just ask why the thing is packaged with the console then?
-
Excellent.
-
It's like someone at MS has a checklist: "What we need to do to look more like the ps4"
-
1 commentaireNow in the near future they will announce a $400 console without the kinect. Once that happens I will be interested in the xbox one again...
-
1 commentaireThat's a lot of 180's. Any more and soon MS will be stuffing PS4's in the boxes.
-
2 commentairesNow all they need to do is release a version without kinect.
