A dozen or so new threads about Thorn and how OP it is and it needs a nerf pops up everyday. However, most arguments about nerfing Thorn is emotional rather than logical. Most people get frustrated by the poison and slow recovery of Thorn rather than anything else. Many times people are not even killed by the Thorn user, they are killed by the next opponent who comes along when they are poisoned.
Argument #1. Thorn kills me too fast and nothing can stand up to it. When I actually look up most people who make this statement, they are usually using an AR. Considering that AR have the longest TTK in crucible, Thorn will dominate it vast majority of the time. I have seen people with the TLW, Hawkmoon, Red Death, The messenger, Bad Juju, and Mida crush Thorn users. So it is not be all and end all weapon.
Argument #2. Thorn requires no skills. If Thorn requires no skills than every individual who uses a thorn must have a insanely high K/D ratio. If you actually take a look, you will see that most Thorn users just like most crucible players in general have a K/D of less than 1.
Argument #3. I would win at Trials if everyone didn't carry a Thorn. I seen groups who carry thorn themselves, complain that Thorn is ruining trials because they are not as effective with it as good players. If you have the same gun as the other group and you lose, it is you and not the gun.
Argument #4. I refuse to use a Thorn because it is for scrubs. Most people who make this statement, have tried using it and got owned so they get frustrated by the fact they cannot dominate like some other Thorn users. Now if you do well with it and put it aside for a weapon that puts at a disadvantage, then I say you are not thinking strategically.
Argument #5. Thorn is so OP no one uses anything but Thorn in Trials. If all players have deviated toward the same weapon, in actuality, the game has eliminated the weapon factor and reduced winning to player's skill set. If all players are using Thorn, the most skilled player will win every time.
Having said all this, I am not saying that the Crucible is completely balanced and perfect. Can crucible be improved? Absolutely. However, Thorn is not what breaking crucible. The balance people are looking for will not be attained by simply nerfing Thorn. I can tell you that TLW is by far the most deadly hand cannon in crucible. If it is wielded by an expert user, it will crush everything. That gun just does not stand out because it is harder weapon to use but far more deadly. If Thorn is nerfed, that will be the immediate next gun that people will complain about. When TLW is nerfed, another gun will take its place.
Edit: Wow tons of responses with some really good points. I want to clarify that I'm not for or against nerfing Thorn. If it gets nerfed (which I think it will soon) then it gets nerfed. What I was trying to point out was the bigger picture that Thorn is not nearly as big as problem as most people have made it out to be. Everyone is so caught up with this Thorn issue (for or against) that there is not enough focus on how broken the overall experience of crucible actually is. Some items that come to me that precedes Thorn are:
-atrocious and constant lag in crucible and garbage netcode
- terrible match making (experience, location, and connection)
-unbalance overall weapons system
-unbalanced classes and abilities
- lack of proper effective range on most weapons (range stats are not true indicative of actual range in game play)
-separation of PVE and PVP gun stats (Thorn was initially buffed because it was useless in PVE)
The reason I picked Thorn to make this point is because at the moment, this is the most talked about weapon. Few months ago would have been Suros, and before than would have been Vex. Crucible is broken because the fundamentals behind the game are broken.

1 commentaireHand cannons are pistols and should not outrage any type of rifle in anyway

Last word perk needs fixing and thorn does need a nerf. It's the only two shot headshot in the game with ttk almost .2 lower than every other gun besides the other two exotic hand cannons. I've used thorn since before its buff and I thought it was much more balanced then besides the mag size

Bumped this thread.great valid points that thorn makes the player

2 commentairesModifié par ScapeGoat711 : 6/25/2015 12:50:20 AMThe weapon isn't getting overused for no reason. The same goes for the last word too. Hawkmoon is no saint either. These weapons have the cheapest way to kill you. Mainly because they all kill in 2 shots.

10 commentairesAll exo HCs breaks their archtype - they have RoF and impact like no other handcannon in the game. Number are logical argument. Thorn fires as fast as Word of Crota, but Thorn damage is same as Fatebringer. Hawkmoon RoF is from Fatebringer, but damage is same as Timurs Lash.

I have an emotion for you to chew on. I don't use my Thorn (and it's maxed) simply because I don't want to. It's not to put myself at a disadvantage or because I suck with it. It's because I don't find it fun. I want to use something else because I'm just out there to have some fun.

4 commentairesIf I beat a Thorn user with my MIDA, it is because they are bad at this game and they should delete their character. End of story.

Thank you for this, now everyone that does complain about the Thorn. F U C K O F F.

3 commentairesExcept you missed one thing. As someone who has had thorn for nearly as long as the game has been out, I have a different opinion. I had Thorn before it was nerfed, after the nerf, and after the recent buff. I believe what you said with one exception. Thorn is not balanced. Its range is to long for a hand cannon. It allows those that are good with it to shoot clear across maps. No hand cannon should have more range than scout rifles. I've said it before you can kill snipers with thorn if your good. That's just wrong.
-
lmao that's funny. Thorn users are the most emotional scrubs i've come across. They start losing and either leave or start jumping off the map.
-
I agree with your main idea that most people complain about it emotionally but here are some rational reasons why thorn could use a nerf. 1 number of players using it, a recent trails report that was done had 93% of trails players using thorn 2 it is not specialized like other exotics, suros and red death are chosen for health regen, media for speed, tlw for close range low ttk, hawkmoon for potential 2 shot, bad juju for super regen and so on, but what is thorn chosen for? Cause it does everything! It is a 2 shot gun with out the dot, has insane range, final round with dot can almost 1 shot players. Unlike other exotics its usefulness does not have to do with it being unique for other guns it has to do with it being more powerful Stat wise. These 2 rational arguments are why I am for a 40% reduction to thorns impact, this way people use it for the dot not just because you can go even against any other gun by using thorn.
-
3 commentairesThe only people getting emotional are Thorn users after someone mentions a nerf.
-
That was very well put together.
-
While I agree with you and find most of the hate thorn receives to be exaggerated due to the poison it does have a slight edge over other weapons. Thorn can 2 shot very quickly in the right hands. I feel a slight nerf to fire rate or recoil or perhaps a combo of both would be sufficient enough to balance it. Anything more would make it too weak as their are plenty of other weapons that can 2 shot if you look at pulse rifles. The poison effect is strong as it delays your recovery giving the thorn user an edge but that's it exotic perk. Other exotics have nice perks to give player an edge like red death allowing you to combat thorns poison and even get right back into the fight.

13 commentairesModifié par Eshé : 6/24/2015 11:26:59 PMA logical breakdown.
And a closed fist across your jaw for ignorance.
A guardian is standing 30 metres away from an enemy. TLW: • has potential to two-shot-kill - if 30 metres actually means 3 metres. • Will end up being three/four shots for a kill due to TLW's range. Hawkmoon: • has a small chance to two-shot-kill (or one-shot if Holding Aces or Luck In The Chamber activates in the first or second round) • slightly inaccurate across range Thorn • has the range of a Scout Rifle • three body shots grants a kill • two headshots grants a definite kill (without The Ram Helmet) • Two Headshots • two • headshots • literally just two • 86+86+(5x7=) 35 (burn damage) = 207 • Thorn is the only weapon that can two-shot-kill across any range.

5 commentairesYour ending remarks were spot on...for you vets out there...remember when you first got the vex? That was a god's weapon until fusion rifles took a kick in the pants...then there was suros regime...insane before auto rifles simply put were murdered, that's all I used to see in pvp, now I can't remember the last time I was killed by it. Then pulse rifles and hand cannons got their Buffs and here we are complaining about thron...who regrets complaining about vex and suros, anyone??? The real issue is lack of variety for the type dot...thorn is in a class all its own...imagine say a scout rifle with dot...might that even the odds a bit?
-
9 commentairesYour argument #1 is wrong and thus you have lost all claim to logic. Thorns TTK is 0.36 and that is from across the entire map. It kills too fast, and from too far. It does these things better than any other primary in the game, thus it is OP. Pretty logical...
-
8 commentairesLogic: Thorn is the only 2-shot kill HC. It has a very fast fire rate. Cover is abundant in the game. = The only viable choice for pvp
-
Well Hand Cannons in general need a nerf to their damage falloff at range. They can do Scout Rifles damage even though their range isn't near that of a Scout Rifles. They also need a relevant buff to Auto Rifles. Lastly, the only thing I think they should touch with Thorn is fire rate. It's too fast for the range and precision that it can kill at. If Bungie nerfs the damage falloff properly, it would fix a lot of problems with Hand Cannons. TLW would be balanced because it would still deal great damage, but only at short-mid range. And Thorn wouldn't be able to snipe from across the map. I just think Thorn is unbalanced because of how many people are using it. Scout Rifles and Pulse Rifles are perfectly balanced. Now it's time for Hand Cannons to take a short step back, and Auto Rifles to take a step forward. Anyways that's just my two cents.
-
To argument #2 the thorn takes no skill which is true. You can give to an average player he will do better but if some is more skilled then the other person obviously he will win the thorn battle.
-
I'm using the last word and most thorn users get killed super quick I still need hide till I regen health and shield or someone can finish me off easy. But put thorn in a good players hand damn you'll be 2 shot from crazy range. I think a slight nerf will come for thorn to make it more of a skill weapon, as for TLW I don't see a nerf for this as you don't see too many knocking about it maybe nerfed if they do a hand cannon nerf tho that's only way I see one coming for TLW.
-
I...are...the...be all and end all...scrub
Your words, OP. Your words.
-
Thank you for putting my thoughts into a thread. So tired of all these stupid nerf Thorn threads. If anything, Thorn makes this game more equal. Anyone can get it.
-
The metagame will always exist. Always.

so true i hate to see people crying about thorn being op and when i use tlw I kill people wayyyy faster than i do with the thorn
