Do you think there is an age when you should stop gaming?

I've been reading posts on another topic and there were some very long threads on people arguing about being too old to be gaming. That it is lame, and looked down upon and at a certain point you should hang it up. I've read things like this several times on this forum in the past few months. My personal opinion on the matter is that times have changed. A good 30 years has passed since consol gaming has come into play. I can see how in 1985 if you were 40 years old and playing Nintendo it might have been looked down upon. But for guys in their 30's and 40's who grew up with controller in hand, why should you have to change your favorite hobby? Why would u stop doing something you are good at? I honestly don't know many people who look down on my age group (early 30's) because we spend a few hours at night after our work day is over and our kids are in bed, just because we unwind with a playstation. IDK, my wife has actually bought games that she wants to watch me play through, ( she does not like watching destiny at all tho ), and we both have successful careers. I just want some opinions. I don't care what side of the fence you are on personally.

You don't stop playing because you get old. You get old because you stopped playing.

    • I'm 24 and I'm still as fascinated by games as a was the first time I played super Mario world. Games keep your mind sharp, motor skills intact and I've made some great real friends from it. Most gamers are good people and just want to have fun. You will see a huge rise in the age of gamers over the next couple decades cause we grew up with it. Also f what others think cause we all just die in the end, so get to gaming my friend

    • You are never too old to game! I have been a gamer all my life and started with Atari. I told my kids when I am in a nursing home, alls they need to do is provide me with a console and controller and I'll be happy :)

    • I am 58, retired and play more now then I ever did. I love games like Alien:isolation, dragon age and Farcry. Games are getting better: keep 'em coming. Pity Destiny sucks though. I ain't ever gonna stop, and I'm gonna be buried with a game console: it will give me something to do in the afterlife. Long live the old school!

      • No. There is no age to stop gaming. I look at all of these responses and see I am one of many who feel this way. I would like to share a little of my experience in order to give insight to younger gamers. Like all good things, there is a potential for abuse. There was a time when playing games was like a drug addiction for me. I couldn't get enough and was always looking for that next fix. I had games I would play once or twice and then put them down to move on to something new. It was mostly PC gaming at a time when games came in these big boxes. Needless to say I had stacks of boxes piled up. And then I would be sitting there looking at them all wondering which one to play. As time went on and I got older I realized that I had to prioritize my life and when I would game. I placed limits on when I would play and how many games I would own at any one time. And I made it a habit to finish a game before I moved on to another one. And here I am today, still playing. Good habits in place and knowing I will always game. Because as a medium of story telling and interaction, it rocks! The point of telling you about my "addiction" was to say this, don't let gaming control you. Don't let it run your life. Enjoy, have fun, but always maintain control.

      • Gaming is fun for everyone. Why is it seen as a child's hobby? Because when we were younger grown ups didn't play games perhaps? That is purely because gaming was not what it is now back then. I asked your question to myself over and over, should I stop? Is there a better way to waste my time? Perhaps, but when we desire stress relief and need rest or desire brain stimulation (when we don't get/want sexy Boom Boom times) what else is a more appealing activity? I personally, like many others would just sit in front of a television and watch sitcoms, cartoons and films.. which are great don't get me wrong lol but I find games more rewarding and playing them with friends still makes me feel happy and keeps my social skills in check :)... Destiny's tower on the other hand keeps me in a silent cage. I'm going off track lol my point is that I wish nobody feels old to play games. You shouldn't. They came to fruition in our time. We own and deserve games more than the kids who have been blessed with such entertainment to be available in their childhood. Don't ever feel awkward :) .. unless your playing skylanders and spongebob on your own with tears of joy

      • I'm 43. My first console was Pong. I still play Donkey Kong and Defender whenever I can find them. My kids have to drag me out of the arcades when we visit Disney World. I am never going to quit.

          • I have spent years watching my husband play at times obsessively to the determent of our marriage, then my son handed me his gameboy with harvest moon and I finally understood. That was 10 years ago, I have more games then him and he has eased up on the time he plays. He is 42, I am 52 and we will die with controllers in our hands, but I win.lol

            • Average age of gamers is 24-46 or something like that. Games are a good stress reliever if used correctly.

            • In a way I'm looking forward to my old days and things that will be a whole lot of better with the new technique. I can easier stay connected with familie and friends due Facebook and Skype, I can play with friends over network. And I have something to do. Maybe it sounds naive but I thing our generation, grown up with all this will have great benefit from it, like back in the days with the invention of the Phone.

            • Notice that most people that condemn video games are high middle aged/elderly. Give it a couple years and they'll be too dead to whine about our nintendos.

                • Can't imagine not gaming anymore. I want to be able to play with my future kids and even grandchildren. School them in Mario Kart, Halo, or whatever. Gf doesn't like watching me play Destiny either, but does like watching the strikes.

                    • I doubt I'll ever stop gaming. I'm in my late 30s now and I play with a few guys that are older than me. Maybe an older guy shouldn't bother playing in competitive tournaments (MLG, FraggedNation), but playing games in general is totally fine. Its good for the brain and hand-eye coordination. Maybe if TV wasn't so boring and predictable, I would stop playing.

                      • Never stop gaming. It's one of the best hobbies out there. People just expect 30-40 yr old ppl who play games to be living in their parents basement with no life. This isn't usually the case. If u have a job, wife, kids, and time to game you are a god. Keep gaming brother, ignore the haters.
