The term JRPG is used not because JRPGs are RPGs made in Japan, but because they are a sub genre or a dual genre to the RPG. RPGs focus less on the narrative and more on personal growth and exploration and typically feature only the main character. JRPGs by contrast focused (past tense for a reason) on the narrative and personal interactions with the party group. From Software, a Japanese developer, made an excellent RPG in Dark Souls. Dark Souls is an RPG and not a JRPG because it doesn't follow the typical JRPG tropes.
