Speaking from personal experience, buttons are a pain when you [b][u]really[/u][/b] have to go.
Zipper is faster, as long as you don't go commando you're fine.

The reason I had my bad experience was that the second button had bad stitching, so the hole was too small. That made it a pain. Otherwise the problem I had was you were basically required to iron them or else you had some hills on your crotch. Still think zippers are faster. Just don't go commando.
