Dude, if you bike, hike and do all the crap i do ( along with transporting a 12 foot kayak), get a truck. Not a gas guzzling Hemi like i do, but a small one. A used Tacoma with decent mileage can be easily had on your budget. Heck , even a decent Pennstar V6 Ram Quad cab would work and still get 20-24 MPG. MDS Hemi's are approaching that mileage as well with 390 HP. I bought a 2007 Quad Cab Ram with an MDS Hemi in excellent condition for 12k back in 2010. Getting a 2011-2012 now would be comparable.
If you're dead stuck on a car though, look heavily at the Hyundai Veloster. My friend fresh out of college got one and he loves it. His has the 4cyl with a 5/6 spd standard and it's pretty quick. Aside from that, look for a VW GTI.

Edited by HurtfulTurkey: 7/7/2014 3:03:40 AMI was considering a truck too. I want to buy a paddleboard eventually, but figured I would just strap it to the top of a car. Any other models of trucks you recommend?

Edited by GHOST270: 7/7/2014 3:29:10 AMI love my Rams and my Chevy Silverados. The Chevrolet Colorado is a good truck from what I hear, my neighbor uses it as a work truck on his forestry job. a V6 Chevy Silverado would be good, and there are a ton of them out on the roads. Avoid the Nissan Titan like the Plague. The Honda Ridgeline is OK if all you do is light work. I have no love for Ford vehicles, but they appear to be getting better. If you can find a 2003 or newer Common rail Cummins for a decent price and mileage, jump on it. The 5.9 L diesel has mountain pulling torque and excellent MPG despite its size. Our 2003 Dodge Dually gets 20-23 mpg empty on the highway, and accelerates like nothing else. But for a college kid like yourself, which I just was (thank God that's over) do what i did and find a used 2007 or newer Ram with a Hemi. I wouldn't worry with the V6 or the 4.7l V8, as the Hemi gets the same or better MPG with much more power. My only regret is that I didn't hold out for a 4x4, but oh well. The newer ram 1500 Ecodiesels are sweet, but finding one in your budget in good condition with decent mileage would be like winning the lottery. If the biggest thing you'll carry is a paddleboard, I'd still consider a Veloster. Then again, my buddy has one, and he has to break down his bike to get it in there and he has to borrow his dad''s truck to tow his sailboat. It all comes down to what you are going to do. As much hunting and kayakinga nd other crap I do, I'd have beaten a car to death by now. That's why i bought a truck. Gas mileage is a tad less, but i can do a whole lot more with my truck. Edit: I didn't realize i typed that much lol

Awesome, thanks for the input. I'd take fuel economy over towing power, since I don't foresee myself towing anything, really. It won't be a college car, it'll be the car I use to move around a few places after graduating (a couple schools for the military, bases afterwards, etc.). I'll be using moving trucks, but I'll still have personal stuff, dog, etc. For my bike I usually put the back seats down and take off the front tire, which I'm fine doing. For diving I use a large rolling bin for my stuff, and for hiking I just keep a ruck and some food and stuff. Nothing's being towed, I just want a sturdy car that can hold stuff.
