I'm curious as to what you thought of the ending of Halo 4 (where the Didact is talking and you see the Chief's armor being removed) and how that plays into your understanding of their relationship throughout the game.

  • Weirdly enough I feel the epilogue doesn't say anything about Chief and the Didact's relationship, but it serves to show how their characters have changed individually. I'm curious to how the Didact will continue to combat mankind since he has acknowledged it's too late to stop us from attaining the Mantle. It might mean he will employ even more extreme means than the Composer, or he's come to accept the current state of the galaxy and will ally with humanity sometime down the line. Or both. Who knows. As for the Chief, the epilogue ties into the 'Man vis-a-vis Machine' theme of Halo 4. This is the first time he's taken his armor off since October 20th, 2552. So it's rather symbolic of him becoming a human again since his armor has been the machine part of him. Nearly every human in existence has only ever seen Chief as this 7' 2" hulking mass of machine and metal. Not only that, but the ending ties into the prologue in how Halsey is talking about Spartans as humanity's destiny as a species. Gojira pointed out that this scene in the epilogue is eerily reminiscent of Da Vinci's human anatomy drawing, basically implying that Chief is at the next stage of human evolution.

  • True. So not a direct relationship but I feel like since they are both "on screen" at the same time 343 is trying to say something about how they are related. I remember the first time through the end I thought, Chief's now a Forerunner. Totally unrelated but since you're apparently the go-to guy about lore: What do you think all the data pads in Reach were about?

They data pads detail a group of human Smart AIs called the Assembly. They essentially viewed us as their flock and they were our shepherds. They've existed for about 200 years and employed means to guide humanity in the right direction. Some of which include the formation of the Spartan-II project, coining the term 'glassing' to make the Covenant appear more destructive than they actually are, and marking planets for colonization and non colonization. By the end of the Covenant War the Assembly agreed they can't hide in the shadows and guide us and will start to employ measures to reveal themselves to humanity and work together as equals rather than shepherd and flock.
