Take it nice and easy and pay a lot of attention to your surroundings. Dark Souls is a game that has a ton of small hints and cues that'll stop you from getting killed (ex: a scorched bridge right after seeing a dragon fly by might not be that safe to cross...).
And don't be a little bitch like Vampire Nox suggests and summon people. Ruins the fun and feel of achieving something by yourself.
