Probably just a bad battery if it is not holding a charge.

  • Well the person who gave it to me said it'd been sitting unused for 6+ months(he'd gotten a new one)

  • Do you know how old the battery is? And it does not help if it has been sitting for six months not being used.

  • The battery is a couple of years old i think.

  • You could always take the battery down to AutoZone and let them test it by actually putting a load on it, I am sure there is not too much of a difference between a lawn mower battery and a car battery.

  • I am sorry for assuming you lived in the US :( Just take it anywhere that has a battery tester, I work in a vehicle maintenance shop so I always have one readily available when I am dealing with charging system issues, and an AutoZone downtown if I am working on my personal vehicle. Since the lights on your charger were not coming on and you said the charger was working, your battery charger could either be intermittent and not working all the time, which could be a loose wire or something, or the battery is bad.

  • I tested my charger on a battery for light diesel engines on trickle charge and within an hour the 50%,75% and 100% lights were lit up although the battery i tested my charger on was already 50% charged.

  • The charger could still be intermittent, working sometimes, but not all the time. That is likely not the case though, just always a slight possibility. The battery most likely needs to be replaced, but you could try a low setting trickle charge for two hours or something again just for the hell of it.

  • I've tried that and put the battery on fast charge just to see what might happen.

  • New battery time! Depending on your available funds. Seriously, take it to Marshall Batteries whenever you have time and they are open, and see if they are able to test it for you.

I am going to do that as soon as i can and now that i pretty much need a new battery i fully expect other problems with the ride on mower.I can easily imagine a gummed up carburator, dirty oil and oil filter. The engine is a Briggs and Stratton Vanguard 15.5 hp.
