Has anyone here done volunteer work?

I just went to the library and signed up to be a volunteer but there's a waiting list. Has anyone ever done volunteer work and if so what is it like? Is it just like going to work (which i've never done)?

  • I volunteered once to impress some girl. Pretty much a massive waste of time with zero payoff. I won't say I regret it, because I learned from the experience, but I won't do it again.

  • Yes, but it was for my senior project. I had to maintain a baseball field...

  • You put in a lot of hours and you don't get paid monetarily. Depending on your work that you do will come with certain rewards and in some situations learning a new skill set. I worked for a volunteer haunted house. I learned business, designing, building, management, etc. I can't put it on a resume, but I can macguyver a lot. And it was fun to scare people. Other than the operation costs, the rest went to charity. Then I worked volunteer 911 EMS. It was fine. There were a lot if expectations an a lot of hard work, but helping people far outweighed the frustrations. I left because I had to make money to support my family. I recommend volunteer work as it humbles you and is very rewarding to the soul.

  • Yes, both voluntarily, and un-voluntarily.

  • I volunteered at my city park for a scholarship. It's extremely boring.

  • Depends entirely on the type of organization you're volunteering for. It could be anything from filing and moving boxes to cleaning up after a storm

  • I had a work placement last year that was technically voluntarily as I didn't get paid. It was just for pure work experience. I basically did -blam!- all considering nobody bothered to delegate any work to me.

    • What it's like depends on where it is. That's like asking "What's it like to have a job?" Depends on the job.

      • You work various activities for free, hence the title "VOLUNTEER." I volunteer all the time.

        • I had to do it as a punishment, back in middle-school. I was caught destroying school property so I had to sacrifice part of my winter break for cleaning around the school and such.

        • I did volunteer work as a graduation requirement. It was at a library. I hated it so much.
