Smartphone + Widespread controller support, I think is the way to go. I like my handhelds and own both a 3DS and a PSVita, but damn, eventhough the PSVita is relatively new, it still looks and feels like archaic technology next to my Galaxy S4, and don't even get me started with the 3DS.
Also, with emulators on Android, I can play a lot of my favorite games up to the N64, and I think PSP emulation has surfaced and I know that Dolphin for Android (Gamecube, Wii) is currently a work in progress.

To me, the 3DS just doesn't seem like enough. It's a cool concept I suppose, but it still doesn't seem to be a big enough change to bring new exciting games. I could be wrong though, I haven't really looked into the Nintendo market for quite some time.
