I'm already into PC gaming but I've been meaning to upgrade my HD 6870. I was going to crossfire but I think they're discontinued now.

Upgrade to a 7000 series instead. If you can, always go with a higher end single video card over dual video cards.

I was looking at the 7000 series. Would the 7870 really be a significant upgrade?

You should wait for the 9000 series a.k.a. Volcanic Islands AMD is releasing this year. It'll me a significant upgrade over your current 6870. On the other hand, if you ever plan on using a multi-GPU setup, I recommend taking a look at nVidia cards. Crossfire has the problem that the perceived framerate is lower than that suggested by the programs like FRAPS. To understand more about this phenomenon here's an article on framerating and why Crossfire isn't as great of an improvement over having a single GPU. In short, SLI is better for multi-GPU setups. But if you don't plan to use more than one GPU, I recommend looking forward to either the Radeon 9000 series coming this year. Keeping an eye on the green team and the GTX 700 series is also a good idea.

Yes, yes it would be. If you can, buy a 7950 and overclock it. Once a 7950 is overclocked, it's as powerful as a 7970. This is what I'm doing. Doing this saves you about $100.
