What are you thinking in terms of weight, and the amount of time to camp. This is important for choosing your gear. And post your back pack, need to know the kind. If you build it like a bob, minus the water, with a filtration kit, you can keep it light.

  • Well I plan to camp multiple times during the summer starting with overnight trips and then going out longer. The backpack is an Athletech. Just found it out in my garage. And aren't filtration kits expensive?

that bag should be sufficient. Not really, i had two types for my week long hike in Wyoming, one is a ultraviolet ray kit, which kills everything, the other is a purification pen, which dissolves chemicals into the water, and a bleach like smell evaporates out after, the first requires batterries, the second only about 2ozs of the chem, which is good for like 50 gallons. being that you are doing an overnight trip, and hiking it. that should be simple. [2]6*8 tarp for cover rope to hang the tarp in rain. sleeping bag insect repellent nalgene bottle multi tool no clothes really needed, since you are just doing a night, perhaps a pair of socks, and a camp towel. bring a compact rain coat/pant combo survival kits are good, they have the essentials and are compact. as far as food, thats up to you, water should be carried, but you can get a purification kit cheap. a decent blade head light, one you can strap to your head fire kit, should be compact, add a lighter to it good terrain map of the area you are going to hike and a decent compass, and means to navigate being that its florida, if you have a smart phone you can gps tag your departure point, and receive a signal a couple miles in most likely. lots of power bars, these can be a god send if you lose your food for some reason toilet paper, and a hand shovel, you want to bury it for many reasons, one being that your shit can attract critters to the area. Basic carry kits lists are everywhere online, but it really should be tailored to the individual. Im assuming you will do a 3-5 hr hike in, have an hour to set up, a couple before sleep, then the next day, pack it out. some extras you may want to consider, is a camp bible, and a good bear spray, it works on everything, i also carry a .45 but if i remember your to young. That being said, bringing a bunch of extra stuff isnt needed. Pack light, wear a good set of hiking boots, and enjoy. There can be more to be safe, but if you are going with someone who is experienced you should be fine, most hikers will tell you to bring +3 days of supplies for an emergency, which might be smart. and im sure other will suggest more, but its really up to you, a good way to gauge is by looking at a BOB that is +3 days more than what you are hiking, minus the extreme survival gear. Last thing to note, find yourself a good hiking/camping forum, and find out more there, im doubting you will find many people who are experienced here. http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/emergency-handheld-uv-water-purifier.html PS: If you come to va to camp or hike tell me, ill be doing a couple day hikes with friends to fish and camp, for two or three days, and plan on using our dogs to help carry shit, should be entertaining.

  • Well if your coming to camp let me know and I can give some good suggestions, and I will do a couple 3-5 mile hikes to lakes and streams, to catch and eat and camp for a night or two, no exact dates yet. Regarding the edit to your post, either find someone to go with, or look locally for places that are easy to start in. My Wyoming trip was pretty brutal, but it had a lot of elevation changes and 50 miles Hiking in three days, I wasn't totally prepared, and having some experienced hikers help to alleviate problems I didn't foresee, and it's always safer. If you plan to go alone, tell someone specific the time frame you plan to return, and that they should expect a call. This way if something happens, and you don't make it, you had a lifeline in action to get help. We actually went with a satellite phone, but bein that your doing a few miles, you could use a phone, the short hikes I've done here in va I had reception 90% of the time.
