That is logically explained in the Bible. Man was given free will, and is tempted to sin by a rebel angel. What I always wonder is why God would have given us an appendix, tail bone, or wisdom teeth. Did God have useless body parts that he gave us as well? Makes more sense to me that those would be evolutionary remnants, rather than the created image of perfect being.

Have we completely ruled out any possibility of them having a purpose to us, just wondering?

Creation through evolution, I'd imagine.

If you believe the book of Genesis has no literal meaning, that is possible. Though that does beg the question of what in the Bible does have literal meaning.

We can generally tell from context; historical stuff like accounts of kings and nations, which can usually be tied to actual events through third-party research should be taken literally; other things, like the creation story and, I say hesitantly, scenarios like Noah's Ark or Jonah's whale story, are likely exaggerated or outright altered to be understood. I'd wager that even our current understanding of the beginning of the observable universe would be considered rudimentary within a hundred years of progress. Just imagine trying to describe that stuff to people with little education. I could be terribly wrong and it could all be entirely literal; however, I don't believe that's the case based on available evidence.

Only Leviticus is meant to be taken literally.
