It wasn't the first assault rifle, it was the first mass produced one. That title belongs to the Fedorov Avtomat, a World War I Russian automatic rifle. The Mondragón rifle was one of, if not the first automatic rifles (not assault, though) and was built in 1887. But still, the StG 44 is an amazing rifle; I love it.
Edit: I was wrong. German engineering kicks too much ass to be second.

Nope, not an assault rifle. Part of the requirements to be an assault rifle is that it has to be chambered in an intermediate cartridge. 6.5x50mm Arisaka is a Battle Rifle cartridge, not an intermediate cartridge. You are looking at an Automatic Battle Rifle. Just like the M14 was not an Assault Rifle, neither was the BAR or FN FAL. All of them Battle Rifles chambered in a Battle Rifle Cartridge.

Ah, my mistake. Thats good, since now I know the Sturmgewehr 44 is actually the first assault rifle.

No problem, it's just one of those factoids that I have to know to defend my right to own firearms. I have to use it a lot...

Would i lie to you guys? :D!

I'm not sure if this is true, but I heard that Hitler did not like the idea of the StG 44 when he first heard of it around 1942, which postponed manufacturing. Once again, don't quote me on this.

I wrote about that in my post. Yes he didn't like it at first (which halted production) but after firing it he ordered it into production immediately and gave it its name "Sturmgewehr".

Sorry, must've missed that part. Man, I am off today.
