I really like Destiny 2 because of it's gunplay and some MMO aspects like questing and crafting. I think with the upcoming update Frontiers they are doing what they've continued to do by updating systems and improving upon them like they did with the subclass changes. Something I really hope Bungie considers in the future is the addition of trade skills and armor crafting. They already have a lot of the systems in place with planetary resources. If they were to associate a trade skill and level with certain types of resources they could add a leveling system and tie that in to a crafting system.
Quests and crafting are not unique to MMOs. They're part and parcel to what make up RPGs. Destiny is not an MMO at all; it's a looter shooter. Looter shooters have RPG elements baked into them because they came from MMOs in the same way that MOBAs came from RTS games (remember, Borderlands was marketed as a "single-player MMO back in the day). Bungie got rid of their rudimentary armor crafting back in D1 when they got rid of plasteel plating and other Armor mats, and they got rid of planetary resources years ago to "simplify" the game (and probably to take some of the load off the engine). They are unlikely to do anything like what you want them to do here because the game itself probably can't handle it, and because they simply don't have the resources at the studio to devote to it. Remember, the bulk of their now reduced workforce is on Marathon because that game really will be make or break for them.

  • And just because it's called an MMO doesn't make it one.

MMO: an online video game with a large number of players to interact in the same online game world. So yes, Destiny qualifies as an MMO Not saying it’s an mmorpg like WoW, nor does bungie state that. It’s an action shooter mmo. And they certainly do incorporate many aspects of mmorpgs into the game

Looter shooters came from MMOs in the same way that MOBAs came from RTS games. Borderlands was marketed as a "single-player MMO" back on the day. Of course they'll include aspects of MMOs. To be an MMO, you need to be "Massively Multiplayer", a la WoW, FF14, etc. Three and six person groups aren't massive. Tower instances aren't massive; hell, each instance of any relay in Warframe can have three times as many people in it as D2's tower instances can, and it certainly isn't an MMO. Destiny is a looter shooter, not an MMO, regardless of how it's marketed.

  • That’s a nice argument But destiny is still marketed as and is referred to as an mmo by the developers. So people are going to have expectations based on their previous experience with MMOs. Like I said, the genie is out of the bottle. So while you can make “well technically” arguments, it doesn’t change what the mass perception of the game is.

  • We can thank Luke Smith (RIP his career) for their marketing crap, with him lusting after his WoW glory days, but regardless of how they market it and how many people think of this as "baby's first MMO", it still doesn't change the fact that it isn't one.
