It’s been a hot minute since I played, so correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t The Library the level we’re introduced to the Flood.
I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be cramped, and claustrophobic while we’re under constant assault from a new, terrifying enemy. Opening up the level with branching paths & open spaces, while also lowering the amount of enemies would really ruin that oppressive feeling.
I’m also always a fan of boarding Covenant ships, so taking that out for a desert mission is very blech to me. But I also live in a desert so they aren’t very appealing environments to me.l

343 guilty spark introduces the flood. The library takes place just after that.

I see. Still, everything I said still applies. This is right after the Flood’s introduced, so establishing them as a threat is important. A level that’s cramped & claustrophobic, where you’re constantly under assault does that nicely. Real stressful, but in a good way & all that.

The Library is less “cramped and stressful” than repetitive and tedious. You’re basically running the same hallway back and forth for, like, four floors.

Cramped & oppressive is what I remember, but I have only played the level once so I’ll take your word for it. Still, those things aren’t mutually exclusive. Even if it does need a revamp to be less repetitive, that doesn’t mean the revamp should take away that oppressive feeling.

Yeah, the Library's halls are generally much larger than the previous level's. Presumably that was on purpose just to mix things up a bit, though there are a few sections of this level with tighter corridors too. I figured more tight corridors but with a few branching paths would definitely help mix things up a bit from what is basically 'large halls, lotsa Flood, shoot and move forward', at least for the most part.

Are they? I genuinely remember that level beimg super cramped. Either way, I’m not actually sure branching paths is the best way to go here. Less focus on exploration, and more focus on just pushing through the horde makes the Flood more intimidating.
