Some games, destiny, and a discussion

So I've been messing with games like Prey, Deathloop, Returnal...I know there were more just had a brain fart though. Why do I bring these up? (haven't finished them so try not to spoil them for me) Kinda what happened to Elsie first. They all deal with being stuck in a loop, not knowing they're in a loop, then learning to adapt within the loop. The major question I had was, what if no matter what, you were following a design? Like, you are told you will learn, that this is how you overcome it. Side note, beginning of prey, there is a little convo about the loop from the character (not the scene, it's an email or book), that kinda made me think of the loop the nine first take on, initial beginning of thought...stuck until one change starts. She was stuck, then a change, she claims to know everything...and now is in a new phase...or is it she doesn't remember, I mean Destiny. Then I was thinking, while this may be the second collapse, what if it's just the same design of the first, I mean nothing much to fall back on. What if we are stuck in "the first day" loop. Yes years pass, have passed, don't let "the first day" keep you thinking only a day. As I had a discussion a couple days back on this topic, and the right word was given...a dilemma. We are told we are doing new things, though given the nature of the game, are we really? What if you're walking the path you've always walked, you just don't remember...you're not meant to (really see why in prey, a blank slate test subject). I get there is an immediate story that is at the forefront for many, that is the game to them. I am so happy that Bungie took this approach with seasons, seems more people are interested in mysteries and engages them. Allows the original mysteries from grimoire to be pondered in relation to story.

All this talk about loops reminds me of something I’ve been thinking about recently concerning the next expansion. Lightfall will most likely feature us raiding the city of a foreign species on another planet, targeting the mysterious being they’ve built their home around, and claiming it’s power for ourselves. Sound familiar? Remember the Dark Future where Zavala and his allies chased the Traveler across the galaxy and used Ghaul’s cage technology to force it to come back with them and give Zavala the light? Maybe the Red War is the biggest loop of all. We will take their home, take their light, and then we’ll threaten their very existence. They’ll go all in on this “strand.” If they wait, they die. But if they attack together, they can take back their home, their darkness, their hope. Or they die trying.

    • Took me a while to formulate my complete thoughts on this, but yes, the nine. There's a line in the Christian Bible: "From dust you came, and to dust you shall return." This is how I've always thought of the nine and the light/dark. Consider The Awoken in the Distributary. They constantly underwent political change seemingly infinitely, leading to indecisiveness and stagnation. Mara removed them from this loop with subterfuge and trickery, and escaped with the rest of the Awoken. If you think about it, not only do the Awoken represent coexisting light and dark, they also represent loops. The Dreaming City is cursed to forever be plagued by Taken and Blight. The Corsairs constantly fight the same battles over and over. Hell, we kill Dul Incarnu over and over. All this to say, Paracausality is much represented by loops. The Undying Mind was in a Paracausal loop, allowing it to bypass death. The Hezen Axis Mind is tireless and infinite, but also Causal. A loop is a paradox, finite but repeating. We see so many loops in this game in particular that we become a little desensitized to it. There's still something I must be missing, but I'll come back to it. The Awoken are the lock. Paracausality is not the key. Or not exactly. It has to be some nuance within it. I'll do some digging. Unfortunately for me, that means reading through Marasenna again. 🤮 Anyways, Ciao.

        • When you talk about being stuck in a loop I think of fortnite(pardon my language). I just think of that goofy jonesy guy yelling about us being in a loop. Goofy game but good post.

            • We, Guardians are not in a “Loop” though. This is the final solidifying timeline. Like TV’s LOST. What happens always happens because that how it happened. We are gonna die at the end of Destiny cause that’s well our Destiny. But Life in the universe will continue on its own because of our sacrifice. There no more “loop” this is finality. The Gardener and The Witness will be destroyed. We will kill The Witness and he will kill The Traveler. With both gone life will grow and build and carry on forever. Bravery, inspiration, Sacrifice. That’s the real “Loop.”

We know time loops in Destiny are not only possible, but have happened on multiple occasions. It makes me think back (or forward😄) to the instance of Praedyth’s fall. Praedyth is an interesting case because we actually find his body, yet in the lore he is believed to have escaped. Saint-14 as well. Both of these instances involve a loop that stays the same until change happens. A paradox that isn’t a paradox if you think in terms of where the change is coming from. This also has to do with the Nine, existing because we exist, and yet they are the reason we exist. The collapse may be what starts and ends us. Maybe WE are the final shape, in that in the end we are the strongest but also carry the knowledge of the light, so we combine the two philosophies to creat something from the nothing we now reside in. We are the Nine. We are the reason for our own existence. We are stuck in a loop that spans life itself. And the only way to break free is by some sort of small change in the loop. Even the flower game was a loop of life and death! Summary: I think you make a good point! Definitely something that is possible in the universe of Destiny!

                • The only person in destiny who appears to be in a time loop is the exo stranger, or at least she’s the only one in the timeloop that remembers other time loops.
