I don't mind the flawless lobby nonsense when you are still on your flawless card. Grinding additional adept drops after flawless shouldn't be a cake walk. But when you reset that should be it. You are back in the normal matchmaking pool.
The problem last weekend was whenever you went flawless you were taken out of the flawless pool and put into the pool where people had losses on their cards resulting in those individuals getting stomped 5-0 while people farmed adepts.
Seems like bungie either goes extreme one way or extreme the other.

I'd actually say the opposite; after hitting Flawless, you should stay in that pool for the weekend even if you reset, but you should have a chance at an Adept drop after every victory, even after you've lost a game. I.e. Get Flawless, have a chance at additional Adepts on ANY win before weekly reset.

I wouldn't care if you got guaranteed adepts. Problem is for the bulk of people it's just not worth playing after flawless and you have to tell everyone that asks you no I can't play with you because I'll just be doing more harm then good.

Sadly the flip side of that is what gatekeeps the mode. Knowing that at any point you could be put up against someoneon their 10th Flawless of the weekend makes it feel like it's a waste of time; there being no time where you can guarantee a competitive match at your own level. It's nice that Bungie has given those of us not in the top 10% actual rewards for playing Trials, but if it keeps being as elite-catering as it was before the changes, all that will happen is the majority will earn whatever rewards they were grinding for (Vorpal/TT Reed's in my case), and then we'll go back to ignoring the mode, and it will go back to being an unpopulated side activity, the way Survival still is now. One of the aims of the changes is to make Trials more accessable, and that means making it more competitive and less luck-based. If I (Flawless never) get to 6 wins Flawless, and then have to play that last game against a 6-win team that have been Flawless 8 times already this reset, I'm just gonna give up; I have 0 chance of winning that game, and it invalidates a lot of the time I spent getting there. It's nice that you want to carry people to the Lighthouse, but there are ways of doing it without going Flawless yourself. If having to play matches against people closer your own skill level puts you off, I'm sorry to say, that's the best thing that can happen to the mode.

I played trials all while it was an "unpopulated side activity" as you put it. Your time will be invalidated that is the nature of trials. Couldn't tell you how many times in the past I've reset card after card for 8 hours straight before finally getting a flawless. You either enjoy elimination or you don't just like you either enjoy master raids or you don't. Master raids are currently an "unpopulated side activity". I just want to be able to play games with my friends. Destiny is supposed to be "all about the friendships and memories". It has nothing to do with playing people at or above my skill level. I've done that for years. It's more I'm screwing them over by just playing with them. That's not right. Their should absolutely be a flawless pool but it should only be while you are farming adepts to get rid of gatekeeping the lighthouse. Once you get a new card or reset that's it you should be out of it.

But the rewards for staying should also be worth it as well. Right now they definitely are, but the adept loot is what would really hook people.
