The rewards at the end of the match will almost always be an upgrade, and they aren't even based on performance so you don't have to do well to get good rewards. It's also a farm for quite a few exotic catalysts, so there's that as an added bonus.

You also don't need to equip the upgrades that you get, since PvP doesn't have level enabled. Just having your highest level gear in your inventory is enough, which is nice since if you find a weapon you like you don't have to immediately replace it just because you got a random blue shotty ten levels higher.
