Seasonal Content Is Not Healthy For Destiny

Destiny is trying to be this psuedo-MMO game that Bungie likely is scared of players not playing the game during long periods in order to make money to fund the company. Look, I understand the seasonal roadmap of content is supposed to support Bungie year round but its not good for the playerbase or Bungie for that matter. Lets be real, do you honestly think you can create engaging content that is going to disappear in 3 months and not anger the playerbase? Of course not. Do you think the playerbase will be happy with disposable content created because it only has a 3 month life cycle? Of course we aren't going to be too happy. The game needs quality content, and doesn't need to force me to play the game every single day. This is not saying we don't need stuff to grind for, or to push for, but it can't be everyday and it can't be only there just to make us feel bad because we missed out. This content structure is like battle-royals, and Destiny is NOT a battle-royal. Look the battlepass-like system is fine, it gives exp a much need reason to exist in the game once we are at level cap, this aspect is FINE. However, these honestly bland activities you guys keep trying to dish out to the player base at lightning speed isn't keeping us play the game, its making us lose faith in you guys as a developer. If you are going to release content, make it GOOD content, quality content, content we can INVEST into. We have enough throw away content as it is in Destiny, we don't need anymore. If you need to take 6 months or even a year to make quality content then... TAKE THAT TIME TO DO IT. We will wait, we will manage without Destiny for a few months. All you need to do is release patches with some minor content updates, maybe add some exotic catalysts and add any story content to help transition from one expansion to another. You add good reasons to come back we will, but you keep adding bad reasons to comeback and we won't. MMOs like WoW that you keep touting out have a patch cycle of content of what? About 6 months for major content updates and 1-2 years for expansions. Why? Because its quality check to make sure the content is meaningful, rememberable, and that LASTS. You make throw away content that should just be saved for a holiday event and require us to pay for it's bad quality and you will get less customers. End the seasonal model, its a fortnite idea that works for those battle royal and PvP focused games. Destiny is a PvE focused game, trying to churn out quality 3 month content doesn't work, your best content is the Foresaken, Rise of Iron, and Taken King. Those all had depth in those expansions, they had quality, we could sink our teeth in them. Quality is what we need. Not quantity.

  • I actually wonder if any content was created or if everything we play was part of the original game which was then sliced up to create seasons so they can get more money. #tinfoilhat

      • Bungie aren’t capable of seasonal content, they clearly don’t have the time/manpower to test everything to an acceptable standard, if they did they wouldn’t release broken stuff with every seasonal update.

        • I've been arguing the point about longer times between content drops for ages. We know Bungie has chopped up both D1 and D2 prior to release, that some of that content was then released as DLC every quarter. There's several issues with that, Bungie claimed they didn't want everything to be linear, that they didn't want anything left behind (so now they're just deleting it) and it's created a Frankensteins monster of a game. We don't need content drops every 3 months, sure have community events n such, but the actual game would progress better if Bungie took their time releasing quality content that draws players into the game, that enhances amd progresses the Destiny journey no matter what kind of player you are. For me atm Division 2 has a good model, episodic dlc releases that are free, the world evolves each time. I'm not a big fan of ESO or FFXIV but the same principal happens there, evolving content, further apart.

        •
...do you honestly think you can create engaging content that is going to disappear in 3 months and not anger the playerbase?
This is the tip of the spear. We're going to see games with maddeningly short content cycles measured in hours or minutes. it's already happening in mobile. Games as a service is the new(ish) model. It's here to stay.
Do you think the playerbase will be happy with disposable content created because it only has a 3 month life cycle?
This player base? It's already shifting. The old guard doesn't like it. We like persistence. We love to be able to go back to stuff we really liked. I'll stop short of saying, "Get over it", but it is over. We're not forced to play every day, but we will miss out on things. Just as in mobile, we have to make a choice. I choose to not play a lot of mobile games I first liked. Because of their insistent nature that I play often or miss out on things, I stop playing them. I don't have time for them. Destiny has been like that for me, as well.

        • Like a lot of AAA-companies these days, I think Bungie doesn't realize the long-term damage they might incur by doing this. Sure, they squeeze a lot of money out of people short term, but I see SO many veterans really unhappy with the state of the game. And can you really keep your game going when all the hardcore players leave eventually? It was for slightly different reasons in year 1, but they had to MASSIVELY course-correct because people were leaving left and right. I can't talk for other people, but if they keep going like this, constantly prioritizing quantity over quality, I will leave eventually. And I have spent hundreds of bucks on not just the game but also on merchandise. I have spent thousands of hours. But none of that will matter if they keep churning out disposable content like this, I value my time too much.

        • I'm in full support of the quality over quantity argument. Although I appreciate Bungie's effort to completely remove content droughts from the game, I would prefer more consolidated, focused content drops that are meant to spike player population that happen less frequently. I'd love to see Bungie try a 2 drop a year approach, Once in the fall, and once in the spring. If they had split their team into two groups, each with a year developer time that alternated, I feel like they could create solid $30 content drops twice a year. The in-between seasons can continue to have live events like dawning, sandbox patch updates, and perhaps some form of season rank up pass. The fall dlc would introduce an endgame destination like dreaming city, with a raid, dungeon, new strikes & part 1 of a story etc, and the spring dlc would drop a raid, vendor refeshes, part 2 of a story etc.

          • What they need to do with each season. Give proper vendor updates not just rerelease a past armor set and call it good. Add at least two new strikes and crucible maps. Add a match made activity that's worth doing that has a list of weapons and armor not just a handful of meh gear. Actual focus on updating the sandbox continuously. If your going to have seasonal mods have it work on all sets of armor especially with the cost of masterworking armor. Less focus on eververse content more focus on rewards for actually playing the game a bunch of tokens and blues isnt rewarding. Strike specific loot obtainable outside of it being a nightfall.

            • I finally uninstalled D2 yesterday. I won't be coming back either. I'll still check in to D1 occasionally because it's still fun to play. But D2 died 2 weeks after release and all Bungo has done has slap baindaids on gun shot wounds for the past 2 years. There's no fixing D2 and their current subscription model can F right off.

            • I used to be on this game everyday religiously but now I cannot take being on 2 minutes and this is due to losing any progress on your power level when the season resets.

              • This 100%. D2 is in such a bad place right now but you’ll get flak for even pointing it out. It’s suffering from the miles wide but only feet deep problem. There’s a lot to do but no real reason to do it. There’s nothing to chase that’s on the level of say Fatebringer in D1 for example. People have been saying the loot pool is bloated lately and to an extent they are right but that issue could be fixed very easily. Dedicating what drops where would help D2 a lot. Right now everything drops from everywhere so there’s no real reason to grind specific content for specific gear. A vendor refresh is needed desperately but I doubt we see one even though the gear is the exact same as the stuff added day 1 of D2.

                • Hello, I am a destiny player who has been in the game since season 2 of destiny 1. First, Sorry for my English, but I belong to the Spanish community where Bungie apparently has no one to collect information And I think Bungie should rethink the whole theme of the seasons, the eveverse, the Osiris trials etc. First let's talk about strikes. Currently they are useless, I prefer to do nightfall at 980/950 to get materials, rather than start doing strikes that do not give anything. I remember all the time I spent playing strikes of destiny 1, trying to get the exclusive armor and weapons of those strikes and I remember playing how fun it was ... that's why Bungie must make the strikes useful again and stop being there as decoration to complete boring adventure steps. secondly I want to talk about the crucible; I am not a PvP fan player, but I play it a lot ... and I think it is time for you to put that destiny 1 mode, where you had to capture the ball and score on the rival field. in Spanish it was called (Grieta) mode ... besides they should put the Osiris trialls back on! with armor as beautiful as those of destiny 1. and not like the trials of the 9 thirdly I want to talk about the seasons As for the seasons. I think they are badly raised. There are many seasons, each of which has little content and they take up a lot of work. it would be much better to have 2 seasons with 6 months duration each and with a much more interesting amount of content, instead of being € 60 DLC they could be € 30 ... that have history, new armor, weapons, modes of game like menagerie etc and with the inclusion of exclusive weapons and armor in strikes in crucible etc you would have people much more entertaining and fun. Finally, let's talk about Eveverse. we have lost the seasonal engrams, we have lost the luminous dust that the objects gave when breaking them and all this was not supposed to happen ... Activision was supposed to force Bungie to have eveverse and to include a lot of content there ... but Now there are only you and most things are almost impossible to achieve ... making the 6 contracts that give lumino dust, I get 1200 per character, that is, a total of 3600 ... but then you go to eveverse and you find that A gesture is worth 4200 ... so where is the logic here? If in 1 week I can't buy what I want. and don't tell me even silver! I have paid each and every one of the DLCs. which does not seem fair to me! that now I have to spend more money on evevers

                  • Totally agree, said it myself that having this content that requires you to do everything in it before it gets removed in 3 months just prevents them from making anything that big. Instead we just seem to be getting low quality temporary activities every 3 months that just aren't that engaging. Personally i think Bungie should do one big expansion every September, then a slightly smaller one every April. Keep the season format for the holiday events and ritual activities (and eververse refresh) but then just bin the temporary crap.

                  • Unfortunately this IS the new Bungie. Everyone had to have known this was coming when Bungie announced Destiny 2 as F2P. This is a test bed for Bungie. If it works for them financially then IF there is a Destiny 3 it will follow the same blueprint. This was the price of breaking away from Activision. The game now is basically a 'part-time' game with FOMO to try to keep players engaged so they will spend real money in microtransactions. Bungie could not produce large amounts of content even with two other studios working with them so they in no way have the resources now.
