Learn to parry, some fights in multiplayer become trivial. When the other person goes for an attack their guard arrow will turn red, when it starts flashing hit the button for your heavy attack while your stance matches theirs and the attack will be deflected, they go off balance and lose a large chunk of stamina

When I do that I'm never close enough for an Immediate counter attack

Don't counter attack after a parry, do a guard break then an attack.
