Getting to max level is:
A - Not necessary
and
B - Solo...sounds awful.

Solo isn't that bad. I played with a bunch of friends for most of my Destiny time, but then work caused me to play the game less. I got left behind, they got max light and quit. Now I am struggling to get to 400 light cos 1)I am British and finding similar timezones is a pain. 2)All the LFG posts for heroic WotM require you to be 395+ light. So that is out of the question. Solo is great for getting truly immersed into Destiny, but it leaves you behind when it comes to raids.
