WTAF is this.

So I completed the main RoI story last night. Me and the two friends I usually play with decided that RoI seemed worth it to get back into Destiny. Boy were we wrong. I wish I had timed it, but I'd estimate, not including cut scenes, it took us any where between 45 and 75 minutes to get through the main "story" of RoI. There was a real opportunity here to expand upon a cool idea and actually present a functioning deep story. Destiny is a universe with boundless potential for story telling and endless fun. I have ultimately sunk 130 dollars into this game, and I feel that Destiny now has enough content to justify its original 60 dollar price tag. I don't want this to be all negative, RoI's main story and missions have some great elements to it. The SIVA concept is fantastic and, again, has limitless potential. I particularly liked the last mission. It was very well done and the new area was visually beautiful. Unfortunately that's all I can say for the positives. For the most part, RoI is a few new missions that give us a tour of a re-skinned cosmodrome. I hope the last 9-12 months were spent working on Destiny 2 because that amount of time certainly wasn't enough to justify this. /end rant But let me know what you think. I want to clarify one more thing. I am a Destiny fan. This latest expansion disappoints me so much because of all the missed opportunities and the fact that Bungie has all the tools and talent to take advantage of them. -blam!- you Activision for tying their hands.

  • RoI was an unplanned add on. Since it includes a new raid, $30 if more than justified. If you purchased a Destiny ghost edition and the TTK digital guardian edition and RoI, you would have spent $270. If you have played at least 20 days, including the newly released RoI, you would have a return of $0.56 per hour of play time. How is this a problem?

My partner and I spent about and hour each blitzing through the new story missions. I feel the same towards SIVA as I did towards Oryx. You can't expect us to be invested in SIVA, a supposedly deadly threat, if it's dealt with in an hour. I want to experience failure. The struggle to find a weakness in SIVA. Maybe lose a friend or two to it. Prove to us that it is the threat you've made it out to be. There was so much promise here, and I can't help but feel a little bit cheated. Playing Rise of Iron so far has felt like eating a gourmet meal. It's so freakin' good, but it's over too quickly to properly savour it.

      • I gotta disagree with you. lol. I happen to think this is the best expansion by far. None of the others had as significant a leap in light level, or made even patrol as exciting again since I started my first character. While I do wish they had more story, Bungie's take on Destiny quests has always been to set the scene for end-game play. The actual quests should be treated more as a tutorial. As more players get up to 360+ light, you'll see more activity in strikes, the forge, and after this weekend the Raid. This is not an rpg, the story is not the highest priority. As zAnon said, their focus is now on Destiny 2. They announced long ago that this is the last major expansion for D1. If you feel that you've wasted your money on this game, then maybe you should take a step back and reconsider if this is the gameplay style you enjoy.

All I can say is that between the poor design of King's Fall, the shit show that has been balance in this game and now this reskin ineventory blasting key show. I think I'm just going to be skipping Destiny 2 all together.

          • I also think story was short and could have been so much more. More details to the story, longer cutscenes, actual mission with Saladin maybe and longer missions in itself. Like U said, had a lot of potential. I do see some was missed. Love all the rest around it and if you look at content in total it is definitely acceptable to me, but missing some on the story line.

Do you fail to understand where Destiny is at this point? They've never done long stories, and now that most of their devs are working on Destiny 2 you think a long and deep story is just going to magically appear? Their expansions have never been about the stories.

                • Agreed. This is how I see the expansion: 1) The grind is bad (level 350 it starts) that I actually lost interest in leveling. It's never been this bad. 2) Expansion in what ways? Did we expand: locations (no - still on earth), enemies (no - the same fallen and guess what they are on earth!), expand weapons (no - just getting the old ones back and some tweaked ones with new names). 3) Easier to get into events? No. We use to struggle to find a fireteam, now fireteams struggle to get tokens to play events like Archon's forge. We went backwards in everyway!

                  • Just wow, another whinny kid. Bungie just cut off legacy consoles and you expected a master piece. Bungie already sent a majority of there team to work on Destiny 2 and most likely had a handful of people actually working on ROI. ROI is HoW content that was cut out to be resold later. Due to hardware performance issues of Legacy consoles, Bungie had to cut corners to make ends meet so Destiny would run properly. After 2 years, starting year 3, if you and many others still don't see that Destiny has been a giant Beta and learning curve, then Destiny isn't a game for you.

                    • Personally I would have loved the last mission to be second and then gone on from there. You hear the female Iron lords voice say something about helping before the final battle, so would have loved to have been more invested to find out what really happened to her. Perhaps ending in a real battle with Siva at the end as during the battle which is the last mission now, you got infected with the Siva virus and the only way to stop it would be to destroy Siva. I also would have done the start with Lord Saladin in first person for a few minutes, having you fighting the Siva swamp then shift into the cut scene to give you some connection to it. As to be honest I just didn't care as there was no reason to. Iron lords seem stupid and weak in this story, all but one dying from something we took out in a few hours? How does that make you want to be one or carry their name forwards? It's just a whole bag of missed chance and disappointment again, sadly.

                    • Completely agree. This add-on was not worth even half the price they charged for it. Pretty much everything was a reskin and it all just comes across as yet another DLC to tide players over until the crap show that is Destiny 2 will be released. It cost half as much as a full priced game yet had a very low amount of content. The story was terrible as the hero's the lords of iron are pretty much instantly forgotten about and their heroism seems pretty pointless considering I did what they couldn't on my own. Ok I get the raid hasn't come out yet but they never really add much more to the story. Look at TTK for example it had a pretty good story but all the raid added to it was Oryx isn't dead yet, finish raid, ok now he is dead. I really don't see ROI raid adding anything good enough to make the story actually mean something. TWO!!! of the exotic quests are for weapons people have already earned! Hell you couldn't even use one of the pre-order bonuses until you had done said quest and even then is was nothing more then an alt skin. Overall imo this was a very lazy add-on sure a lot of people will like it but then that's how destiny is still alive. It suckers people into thinking they are getting good value when they sure as hell aren't.

                      • There were disappointing aspects for sure, but there is stuff to do, the story was just about the same as TTK and we paid more for that. Archons forge definitely has some issues, like respawning and being kicked from my event, but hopefully they fix some. In another way it's cool too see how much more beautiful and smooth it feels, excited to see how destiny 2 shapes up

                      • Thank you! It's activsion making the calls for dlc shit. Not Bungie. Bungie makes the game and activsion tells Bungie wait to do and sells it. I do feel like the story could have been a bit longer, but I feel like the story we got has been the best story we have gotten so far.

                      • All the DLCs are about the same size. And if you played this game this long, you should know by now that the best way to experience those few campaign missions is solo. If you play with friends it will just be a race to the Finish where you hear more people talking than actual voice actors performing.

You paid for a raid, not story missions. You should stop buying expansions if 30 dollars is a lot for you. Plus it tells you exactly what you're buying if you look on their website or a GameStop website. Don't take it upon faith that what you are buying is good. Do your research first.

                        • Its all about that grind boii. Story is in the grimoire. Do I agree with this? Nah. Not entirely. But heres to hoping Destiny 2 gets all of this right, and the reason this DLC doesn't seem to have much meat, besides a hefty amount of loot, is because most of wungobungo is working on D2.

                          • It just felt like the body of the story was missing. The beginning was there and great, the end was there and great, but there was not one ounce of meat in the middle section. Here's to hoping Bungie can pull off a years worth of events and mini content infusions. I have many things to work on in my book, but it's all kind of "ok, and?" =[

If you play destiny for the story your doing it wrong. Raid, God roll loot, exotics, quests, Strikes and PvP is were the game shines.

                            • I keep hearing people who have spent $130-$160 on this game and all of the DLC and are upset about it. To me, that's a bargain. We are into year 3 and that's all you've had to spend. To me, it doesn't seem like that big of a deal for the amount of time and enjoyment I've gotten out of the game. If you were to buy Call of Duty, for example. You would be buying the new game for $60 each year, plus season pass and other DLC. You'd be way over $200 in the same time frame. I'm my opinion, this game has been worth the money spent. The Vanilla game is nothing compared to what it is now. Bungie has done a great job of making improvements and keeping the game fun. This is one of those games where it is dependent on you as to what you get out of it. I enjoy the game so I play the story missions, patrol, strikes, and raids. I'm not a huge PvP player, but I still do it enough to get some fun out of it. I read the grimoire cards to get the back story. Point being...if you don't do all of the things that are offered, that's on you. The content is out there, but if you complain about nothing to do and don't do the raids...that's your fault.
