In the name Achlyophage Symbiote, we find a combination of ancient greek words that when put together, don't really make an english word. Achlyos (Αχλύος) can mean 'Night', 'Dark', 'Mist' that sort of thing. And Phagos (Φάγος) meaning 'Glutton' 'Eater' or 'Consumer'. Combining the two create this personification of a creature or artifiact that "Eats darkness." The word symbiote is one of the two organisms involved an a symbiotic relationship. Which if you haven't taken biology yet, a symbiotic relationship is a relationship two organisms have together in where one or both of the organisms is benefited by said relationship. I.e. Oxpecker and the Rhino. The helmets quote says "They told me it would eat my thoughts and leave me full of light." So I imagine that the original wearer of this helmet was told that the helmet was an organism that would consume the dark thoughts inside their head and leave them full of light thoughts. But the quote is insinuating that something had gone wrong. It says "They told me-" as though they had told him falsely and he is being accusatory. So the name describes that this helmet is intended to consume darkness in whatever organism wears it. But the quote implies that it fails to do this. I'm not sure of the design and the lava like slime substance -- that appears to move -- on the helmet. I feel it resembles a side effect the helmet has when the dark thoughts are consumed

I feel your right in the sense of its background and the meaning of the name. But what I find far more interesting is the group mentioned as "They". We can clearly tell that the item has at least some organic relation with the moss and planted growing off of it, however, its stats and abilities are likely to prove what the item's intentions are. Also, it looks more like the things implanted in the helmet is more like small gouts of magma. link It mentions eating Darkness and filling you with Light. If the stuff on the helmet is magma, it would (like lava or magma or whatever) consume everything leaving literal Light. When it says leaving extra Light, which could likely mean the extra Golden Gun bullet it grants. It might not make sense for it to be magma because of the "Symbiote", part of the name. What do you think about that?

  • I couldn't find a solid root for the word "Achlyo," and your research seems legit. I'm interested in the term "phage," as in bacteriophage. Such as a virus. So, this could be seen as a "Darkness Virus" attached to the helmet, which makes sense, considering it looks a lot like the material the Hive use to infest certain colonies. And then there is "symbiote," or an organism that profits from being attached to another organism. So, a helmet with a form of virus on it that somehow benefits from being on the helmet.
