Oryx is defeated. You stand there on the edge of his chamber aboard the dreadnaught, watching as his body drifts into space, towards the atmosphere of the planet below. You think of everything it took to get to this point. His son, defeated by your hands. The battle against his warpriest, the dark cellar that lead to a gruesome monster, and twin sisters that protected the one who created them. The universe is a little bit safer now. The Queen who was slain has been avenged at long last, her awoken may now find peace in the void beyond.
From the edge you see a little light appear. You've seen it before a dozen times across your journey here, each time it fleeing as you approached it. Each time it heralded a challenge. But Oryx is dead? Why is this light still here. With caution you stand and begin to approach it once more. It flits about, like a leaf on the wind, you watch how it soars.
Suddenly it rushes you, piercing into your chest, but you feel no pain. No, this feeling is familiar. It places itself next to the other abilities you possess as a guardian. Next to the flames and the lightning arcs, next to the void lies something new. Something darker. A power unlike anything you've felt before.
Something Taken.
Just a short story I thought of while imagining what it would be like to have guardians with a Taken subclass. And yes, shameless firefly/serenity reference included.
