I use a larger canvas and a larger brush size to accompany it. Minimum is about 1000x1000 pixels for a single panel. I think this one is 2000x1000, so two panels. I typically do the main outlines for the ball and eyes with the brush set to 20pixels width. I shrink it down to 10, 5, or even 1 depending on what extra details or corrections I feel like making. Doing this makes a big difference in making it look less pixelated. I leave a little bit in because it can be part of the art style.
GIMP. It's essentially open source photoshop. I would highly recommend it. It's got a small learning curve, but it's something you can get over by just poking around for a bit and maybe some light googling.
