A few days, he set it up just before i sent him the link, he has only been playing destiny for 3 days now and has never played it before.

Ok try removing your refer a friend link to you friend. Then create a new one and send it to him and see if this fixes your issue.

yes we are both on PS4 and he bought the Taken King on Disk

The disc only contains the base game. In the game case the should be cards with codes on them to redeem for the dlc content.
