Pretty sure LMG is the correct term, but I just say Machine Gun. Lot less confusing that way.

It is called a heavy machine because it is a heavy weapon and it's a machine gun so hmg.

Google says a HMG is used on vehicles and such, and LMG's are used by infantry.
