Right after the access policy change it was possible to work around the carpet ban via changing a private thread to public, seen below with the Space Whale comment.

Yeah, closest thing to that seems to be just adding and removing tags.

You mean if you want to have a thread private before posting it officially? Yes if you kept the tags off originally, then added them when you wanted to make it public that is the best way, now.
