Volkswagen's stocks plummet, EPA fraud on TDi

So VW just got caught on emissions fraud, and intentionally installing software to cheat.
Labeled a Defeat Device by the EPA, the software was said to be able to detect when an official emissions test was being run and in such a case turn on full emissions control systems. During normal driving conditions, the cars were said to pollute more, with some emissions such as nitrogen oxide (NOx) said to be as much as 40 times higher than current standards allow.
The stock loss alone seems like it would cripple the company, but couple that with the more than likely pending recall to wipe and reinstall the software into the effected models, maybe even globally (except probably China), could this be the end of the people's car? I wonder if their 68 mpg highway claim on the TDi will now be revamped.

    • the peoples car is going no where. not only do they have the VW name, but they also own Audi, Lamborghini, Seat to name a few. exert from WIKIpedia. " Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT, Škoda and Volkswagen marques; motorcycles under the Ducati brand; and commercial vehicles under the MAN, Scania, Neoplan and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles marques.[13] It is divided into two primary divisions, the Automotive Division and the Financial Services Division, and has approximately 340 subsidiary companies.[14] The company has operations in approximately 150 countries and operates 100 production facilities across 27 countries. VW has two major joint-ventures in China (FAW-Volkswagen and Shanghai Volkswagen)." they will be just fine after this. not to mention, the EPA needs the money to clean up the mess they made in Colorado.
