I agree with his overall point. In the end, there's nothing wrong with precaution in light of everything that's happened over the years. And I also don't place any blame on the teacher who reported the kid. However, this incident still has a clear chain of stupidity attached to it that can't be overlooked. Anyone could take a closer look at the "bomb" and see that there was no explosive material within it. And let's face it.. the damn thing looks more like a movie or cartoon version of an IED than anything we're actually seeing being used. So I don't blame the teacher. I don't even blame the principle for contacting the police. Neither of these two are qualified to make that call and they have school procedures that they're required to follow. But are you seriously telling me that the cops were fooled enough to actually arrest the kid? Seriously?

  • I got arrested along with my friends when I was 13 for asking people who they voted for. Cops will be cops

I understand that. He was also a scared 14 year old kid. And his compliance (and lets not act like "compliance" here means anything more than "He didn't talk". He wasn't resisting or fighting back.) shouldn't have had any baring on the fact that it was a complete non issue.

  • No he wasn't more than just unresponsive he was snarky and disrespectful. Cops can detain anyone who is non compliant that's just how it works.

  • So you've got someone being non compliant about a potential IED and detainment doesn't sound like a good idea?

That's my point. One look at the "bomb" from a trained eye (the officers, one would assume right?) really should have shown that it was just a clock. And from that moment, the whole situation should have been over. Quiet, snarky, whatever. If it's not a bomb, the situation is over. I'm not saying anyone abused power or anything. They were within their right to detain him. I'm saying that a little common sense could have gone a long way toward avoiding the media frenzy here.
