Wait, if you are at medium range is the 'cone effect' noticeable? I noticed that I reliably got head shots with the thorn from close to mid-range. It was only at long ranges that I noticed that I simply wouldn't be able to consistently land head shots. As it is it seems like they still do take a skilled hand you just have to stick to your ideal range. Tbh its nice because I feel like it does add a lot of realism to the game. If you need to make longer range shots just use a sniper rifle.

  • Medium Short to Medium the cone most likely is about the same size as your targets head or only slightly bigger. Medium going into medium long is where it is big enough that your shots could miss. For Hawkmoon it is at the moment before you feel even a slight tick of falloff. Thorn also has High Aim Assist which compensates for that accuracy problem.

  • They work at short to medium range meaning they work at the targeted range de HCs. This clearly means working as intended. They were never meant for long range

  • A cone the size of your head means if you were aiming at the left side of their head, there is a 50% chance the shot could miss. Even at those ranges shooting skill is at its most extreme, where all of your shots have to be aimed at the center of their head in order to be guaranteed a hit. A scout rifle's cone is so small that you could probably hit the eye of someone at medium to medium long range if you were aiming for it.

Because scouts are made for long range where HCs are not. That's the point. The effective range of HCs is similar to autos: short to medium. Scouts are for medium to long and pulses sit in the middle. Handcannons had far too much range capability before 2.0. They are now effective in their intended effective range and not beyond it. You should never have been able to beat a scout from long range, even if you have good aim.

  • I hear what you're saying, but HCS are proving to be too unreliable at medium ranges. Why pick a gun that will hit headshots some of the time when on target when you can just pick a pulse rifle and hit them all the time? Reduce impact if needs be or increase drop off - but don't turn it into a lottery. Even at medium close ranges I've had instances where the crosshiar was bang in the middle of the targets head and it either missed or resulted in a body shot. This is enough to make them not desired in any situation.

  • Well if there's an issue at medium range then I see a problem. Fair enough

  • Hand cannons have never been able to compete at scout rifle ranges, assuming that the rifle user had good aim as well. The Divide was a good accuracy test; specifically the two buildings on opposing sides of the spider tank area. The Devil You Know with send it couldn't make reliable head shots across this space from day one, and it's much less reliable now. Any scout rifle could make easy head shots at this range all day long.

You clearly didn't play pre-2.0. (Yes, I'm being sarcastic) Thorn, TLW and strong HCs such as Red Hand, Fulcrum etc rendered scouts almost useless because they could hit accurately and fairly easily from the same range but hit harder Hell, a good shot with the thorn often beat snipers because of the kick it had when hitting the sniper

  • Agreed - they were too effective at range. Especially the exotics. I would comfortably take on snipers and scout users at medium long distances and even stood a good chance at long ranges. But this nerf has hit HCs ability to be reliably effective at medium ranges, which they need to be.

  • I mostly play PvE, so unlike most people who play the crucible primarily, I encounter enemies at actual scout rifle ranges. If I spent most of my time fighting in cluttered, CQC oriented crucible maps that provide very few opportune places for scout rifles, I would probably agree with you.

  • ahh that explains it. I see why you don't like it but I guess you could stop using hand cannons at longer ranges. Scout rifles might be a better fit?

  • I really wish there was a firing range to test out the bullet spread, because all I can do is speculate from crucible experience, and I can't be sure how accurate that is due to many factors to accuracy in crucible like how fast my shots are paced due to the situation I am in.
