Matchmaking for end game in it's current form would not work. Almost 200 raids, 35 skolas kills, and multiple flawless trials runs of experience tells me this. So, feel free to disagree, but if you do, I probably have more end game experience than you do. What's needed is something more like lfg. But, we already have lfg... However, there are a lot of elite players there that for one reason or another don't want to help the new players. If it was moved in game we would see the same thing. I understand this too... Why invest time in helping someone that you will probably never see again? Sometimes I like to do this for the fun of it, but usually don't have enough time and just want a quick run.
So, when people ask for matchmaking it is because they are frustrated or feel left out of end game content like raids, PoE, and trials. Optional matchmaking would not be used by the skilled players. So, you would have a bunch of unprepared and unskilled guardians trying to kill Atheon or Crota... Or getting absolutely hammered in trials.
This content is best experienced through groups of people that you play with regularly, especially at first... Once you become practiced on the raid then lfg is easy, (my skolas post is: "35 kills send invite" and I always get multiple immediate invites) but you needed the clan experience to get there.
Therefore, what is really needed is a better mechanism for making clans and forming groups. This leads to raid/PoE/trials experience and bridges the gap from new players to seasoned pve / PVP veterans.
