The loot system was built around a trading system they *intended* to add, at least at one point, they commented a while ago it wouldn't be there at launch but would open as soon as they could.
Not saying that couldn't have changed completely since.
But they never said anything about it at all after that.

http://gamerant.com/destiny-trade-sell-loot-feature/ Pre-Launch article, includes direct quote from Bungie:
As for swapping irons in the Tower? Nope. We want you to earn ‘em. You should be able to tell a badass story for every sweet jewel in your arsenal. Once you earn them, the various Guardians under your account will be able to trade them, but weapons belong to the players who acquire them through action and bravery.

As for swapping irons in the Tower? Nope. We want you to earn ‘em. You should be able to tell a badass story for every sweet jewel in your arsenal. Once you earn them, the various Guardians under your account will be able to trade them, but weapons belong to the players who acquire them through action and bravery.
Seriously? lol "We want you to earn 'em." - Please define earning in RNG... oh wait, I think I have it. "Earning: AFKing in strikes because RNG will give you something anyway". Oh, sorry I have it backwards. "Earning: grinding for endless hours and not getting the prize one really wants anyway." Yeah, it must be the second definition... "You should be able to tell a badass story for every sweet jewel in your arsenal." - Aside from the fact that most of us could probably do a better job with our story telling... how many "badass stories" can you get with that much (read as little) content? Oh, Hey, Deejay... wanna know how I got my 3rd LDR 5001? Well, it must have been only like the 27th time I was doing the Sepkis strike and you know that first place, where you see Fallen and Hive? Well, I killed a Dreg so fast he never had a chance to turn around... and guess what? Yup! He dropped the purple engram that became my 3rd LDR! How badass is that!? Nobody else has a tale that badass I bet... I still recount that tale of action and bravery to all my friends... "...but weapons belong to the players who acquire them through action and bravery." - This is really hilarious. Neither action nor bravery is required. No action is required at all to AFK, that can even be done in a NF now. "bravery" lol, so now, being a lvl 29 or 30 and tagging along through CE while the rest of the team 'helps' them get some raid gear is bravery? Not that I really care that people do that, I've been on a team that is happy to help lower levels get through CE... but it's just further proof that no action or bravery is needed. BTW, that level 29 ended up getting a Gjally there, Deejay... while my 32 got... oooooh... wait for it... radiant energy that I really didn't need. Most of the friends I have that play games with RNG type drops say they work just fine as long as there is a balance... that balance being a secondary market type thing where you can get rid of multiple things you've accumulated in order to get some thing(s) you want. They also agree that RNG is broken and almost pointless without some way to trade off duplicates for wanted items. Don't get me wrong, I really like the game, but something's broken...
-
Not arguing with anything you said, but a secondary market does not automatically equal player trading. I could easily see some NPC swapping exotics three for one (or 10 for 1), or swapping raid armor (or upgrading/rerolling items using some combination of items and glimmer as cost). Somewhat similar to what Eris does with radiant energy and shards, but on a larger scale. Bungie probably has a few ideas themselves, but would rather take it slowly since if they well and truly mess up the economy (such as it is), it will be tougher to roll back changes.
-
Edited by A Blue Illusion: 3/12/2015 6:40:45 PMFair enough... player trading wouldn't be an absolute necessity if they just did something. But IMO, there has to be an economy to mess up in the first place. There barely is. I have a level 32 Warlock that I have no reason to do another thing with. Consider: Doing the weekly NF - Best chance (I guess) at an exotic drop. She already has Obsidian mind, 3 exotic primaries, 2 secondaries and Gjally. I don't really need any others TBH... not to mention other characters I have are outfitted similarly and my vault has several exotics I haven't even used. Bonus XP for the week... for what? All my stuff is maxed... what isn't is on other characters. Doing the Weekly Heroic - Coins... don't really need those, I've spent liberally on Xur to get things I didn't have and I still have over 100. I rarely see him carrying something I don't already have. I'm only missing a few weapons... which he never has, at least not that I recall. Daily Heroic - Materials I don't need anymore. I'm in triple digit ascendant shards/energy that is nearly useless. it sits in the vault, waiting for an alt to need it. Bounties (as well as the aforementioned activities) - net me XP... that has no current use. Eris is maxed, there's no tangible reason to keep working on Rahool's level. There's a cap on the Vanguard marks, but even if there wasn't, there's nothing to spend them on. The inventory at any NPC I visit almost never changes... even though there's a countdown timer saying when it will. I've been sitting on the same 200 marks for... probably a month, if not longer. There's simply nothing tantalizing at any merchant in the tower. So what possible reason do I have to even log on and play the daily/weekly(ies) other than to say I did them? I'm working on my alt Titan now. Have him to 31, but just got the last pieces of raid armor last night (got both pieces I needed from CE from the same raid, not sure if that's lucky or not). He will soon enough be a 32 as well... and then what? He already has all the weapons he needs. Got them from a very generous Warlock aunt that is so 'loaded', she has no use for them, so she stuck them in the vault. What isn't already leveled up is close enough that it probably will be by the time he hits 32 anyway. As it is right now, things are just stagnant. Wouldn't it be cool if there were some kind of trading system in place that would actually be new and different? Why not have the ability to allow me to 'trade' with someone who has an exotic (or something I may need) by helping them out? For example: A friend has an exotic I don't have yet and he either has dups, or doesn't like it. I ask if he would be willing to part with it, but I have to help him out by being on his/her fireteam for a certain number of strikes, NF strikes, maybe a raid or something? Or maybe we each have an item the other needs/wants. Same principle, we have to agree to trade and work together on a pre determined task(s) before the trade is final. Throw in a mutual 'trade agreement fee' of a certain # of Vanguard marks as security for the agreement (might as well, it would give them some purpose that way) and now you have people working together, getting items they want, but have no guaranteed way of getting... who knows...

I thought that was just a comment DeeJ made before launch, just blowing smoke as to why we didn't have it.
-
Deej as official mouth piece for Bungie, IS Bungie talking, unless we hear otherwise. In general, it seems people who dislike what he has to say try to spin it in their own way (just my opinion though). If you have a quote/link/source from Bungie (Deej) talking about them bringing trading to Destiny, I'm more than willing to listen. Lots of people want trading and I believe limited trading, in orbit, between fireteam members, post-mission, might work. If done wrong though, it opens up a whole can of worms that would need to be fixed, so I'm not sure its worth it.

Edited by ScribeTheMad: 3/11/2015 6:40:37 PMThis was the article. http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/04/28/destiny-wont-have-player-to-player-item-trading-at-launch Like I said though, it predates DeeJ's comments, so obviously *something* changed.
-
Hmmm it looks like they want to/were interested in implement trading, but only if it can work in a way that doesn't break the game or open it up to large RMT abuse by third parties. Thanks for the link.
-
Yeah, I'd wager RMT was a part of the change. Maybe they just decided they couldn't prevent it properly and didn't want the damage it causes. A pity really, I'd love to trade some of my stuff that's good but doesn't fit my playstyle for something that does.

I've got an article here somewhere where they said they intended to bring trading we just wouldn't have it at launch. But the article is from last April, so pre-dates DeeJ's comments, I'll see if I can find it again and add it. They could have made a total 180 after that, but DeeJ's comments just never had the feeling of an official "we've dropped plans for trading" statement, to me at least.
