I tried it earlier, finished the strike but stayed in the room with the shrieker. So spent an hour and a half doing it and Xyur didn't spawn. Apparently you have to be out in the open for Xyur to show up. There's no way I could have survived in the open for long though. The shields the enemies have are surprisingly strong.
