I think culture may be affected in some ways by it, but idk about barbarism and sadism. I haven't done any specific research or anything, just a thought.

I figured the desert would turn a people to worshipping hardship, triumph over brutal adversity, and their diet would account for the relative lack of vegetation.

It would definitely determine their diet, thats for sure. It's fantasy though, so I think whatever you envision would probably work fine

I like to keep it logical, though. Contradictory, maybe, but that's how I like to world-build.
