Yours was awarded with luck at the end of the Nightfall, you could solo a nightfall and still end up with 5 strange coins for it, you simply got lucky enough to be get gjallarhorn out of it, same for your friend, his result had nothing to do with the reward since it's pretty common knowledge that last place players usually get the best rewards, your friend was lucky too.

If I was gifted one for killing a random thrall then I wouldn't feel that way. (Oh and I'm the king of getting 5 strange coins for nightfalls thanks) Edit: Also isn't it all luck based? Nobody accomplished anything to get Xur to sell it, they got lucky. Unless there's a guaranteed way of getting something it's luck. Its the journey that makes you feel like you've worked for it, be it grinding for coins to buy or punching Atheon in his whiney face. You think you earned any of your titans armour or weps? Cause if not then surely none of it is rewarding
