Ok I just ran a poll here that shows that speed runs are preferred to slow runs 69/31%. This indicates that, while speed runs are far more popular, there are still around 1/3 of players that prefer to take the strikes slow. Add to that our many new members who aren't voting, and we have a substantial group (at least 1 in every 3 guardians you match up with) that either prefer slow runs or don't know any better than to slow run.
Why does this matter? Does this matter? That's a choice for you to make - but remember that the promise of this game is in the community of players and the opportunity to play the game together well. If this means all three members fire up their sparrows and race to the finish, or if it means that every enemy should be wiped before finishing the strike, that should be determined at the start of the match, and should include the views of all players.
Perhaps some good can come from this conflict - Bungie could create two types of strikes: one that rewards the fastest strike finish time, and another that rewards the % of enemies wiped from the map. That would give folks a chance to try both play styles out, and create harmony and good will on both sides of the argument.
So, next time you line up at the starting gate of a strike, why not take a look at your fireteam and make sure they are all on their sparrows before you take off - and if your fireteam jumps onto sparrows off the start, give it a shot yourself, you may find you like it!
