Maybe out of lane flight with the idea that a player could fly a large cargo ship with other players in gun turrets protecting their under-the-radar hold from other players or AI pirates. You could even hire clans of pilots as protectors for you missions or even hire pirates to disrupt other players business, pushing the prices up on your stock. However it's done, i feel manual flight would not only bring in new players( possible pilot only players earning respect) but would also grantee the 10+ years lifespan.
