Finally going to build my own computer

I'm wanting something that can easily handle multiple servers (web, database, etc...) running concurrently, IDEs like Visual Studio and NetBeans, Virtualisation with VMWare (and possibly a VM server), regular stuff like web browsing, email clients, etc... and possibly gaming. I'm also looking to play with overclocking (hence the choice of CPU/motherboard) and have room for expansion in the future. I'm not as well-versed on the hardware side (especially in regard to gaming setups) as I am with software, so here's what I have so far. Suggestions are very much welcome. Case: Thermaltake Armor Revo CPU: Core i7 3770K (3.5-3.9GHz) PSU: Antec HCP 850 watt RAM: 2x8GB DDR3 (at least) HDD: 1TB SATA WD1002FAEX Optical: Pioneer combo BR/DVD/CD drive Video Card: GeForce GTX670 Motherboard: Intel SZ77RE-75K Extreme Series Anything else (monitor, keyboard, software, etc...) I already have or can get without any hassles. No recommendations for pre-built computers though; I want to get my hands dirty.

  • Looks like a good build. Ordered a M17X recently as I needed gaming/portability and Dell were doing 11% off and free shipping.

-Check everything is compatible. -Driver updates etc. -Be sure to read all the manuals, and watch all the videos regarding building. It will save you money, especially if you screw up. -Avoid electrostatic discharge. -If you have no major monetary limitations, I would suggest a GPU upgrade. I'd wager that a 690 is in order. Hell, a 7970 is great for its price. -Your processor seems to be good enough. Really i5+ is good enough for gaming. Not sure about more strenuous tasks. (i7 is actually a bit of overkill if you are just doing gaming, which you are not) -Be sure to get a good PSU. Don't take the Wattage as a quality factor. -16GB RAM is fine. -GET AN SSD. Your PC is great, you should spend a few bucks on this. Install your OS onto the SSD. -Fine. -See above. -First impression suggests it will do the trick. -Good heating system? -Surge Protector? Other: Since this a good PC, I would recommend a great monitor. See the IPS/PLS range. Mechanical keyboard? Note: My opinion/experience.

  • I would recommend getting an SSD. Just to put the OS on and maybe some games. They're definitely worth the money!

    • Good luck. I would totally build myself a big ol' gaming monster, much like several of my friends have, if not for the sudden headache I get when I see the prices of what they call a "cheap build."

    • All I can say is that it sounds like you want a lot of RAM. Whether 16GB is enough, I'm not qualified to say, but I'd err on the side of probably. You'd also be wanting a high end internet connection too (but I assume you've already got that). In the near future, I hope to get me some fibres.

    • I hear you mate, Just got all my parts for my gaming rig yesterday. Waiting for my mate to come around and help me build it. I just don't trust myself with building the thing. Still gotta look for my screen, keyboard and mouse. And A good desk and chair for my room.
